While being annoyed at star ratings is worth poking fun of, the "originally geared toward children" is utterly asinine.

Some of the best movies and literature were not only "originally geared toward children", but are still today written with them in mind. It's not like adults are prohibited from enjoying Pixar because there's not enough sex and swearing. And it's not like this film will be any less appropriate for adults than the dozen or action movies released around it that feature torture porn and tits.

Every single character needs an "origin" movie it seems.

well to be fair, characters having an origin movie isn't bad...its when you pull a sony's amazing spiderman that its just horse shit, hell im actually kinda excited about the new superman movie, but wished they didn't have to rehash his origin, even if it takes up a small amount of the film. a

as for wether the movies should count as a commercial for this is really subjective, personally i was entertained and thought ironman, and especially thor, incredible hulk and caps movies were done well enough and enjoyable enough that i wouldn't consider them commercials. had they been of the first ghostrider movie caliber or daredevil and or elektra, even fantastic four level then i would totally agree.

Eh, maybe Thor, since that one seems to be the most focused on setting up the Avengers, and the others stand on their own as great films.

Either way, I'm not quite sure how the idea of several superhero movies to set up the grand nerd crossover that would have been unheard of a decade ago is a bad thing. It's like getting that extra season of Arrested Development as setup for the upcoming movie. Sure it won't live up to expectations, but I'm still glad they're trying.

I don't think The Avengers was really in the works when they started working on the last Hulk movie; they tied it in at the end, but I think that decision was made somewhere in the middle of production. There was a sequel planned at first, but they decided to hold off while they focused on the other films (Thor, Cap, etc). The others definitely had this movie in mind, but they still work as stand-alone movies - at least as well as nearly any other movie in the modern super hero genre.

I'm a big nerd for Joss Whedon, but I'll be impressed if he can pull this off. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out, either way.

They'd been planning this since Iron Man was in pre-production (there's a teaser for Avengers at the end of that film, after the credits.)

It just feels kind of cynical to me, I guess. I quite liked both Iron Mans, and Thor and Captain America were decent, but smooshing them all together seems to lessen each film somehow.

"Iron Man" was a stand alone film, testing the waters for this. Marvel Studios came into being with "Iron Man". The Hulk's inclusion was questionable, since all previous Marvel based characters were licensed out to other studios (Sony: Spider-Man and Ghost Rider, Fox: X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil & Elektra (probably lapsed by now on the last two), Lionsgate: The Punisher and New Line: Blade (as well, probably lapsed). The Hulk was licensed to Universal, but since they have an agreement with Universal theme park's Marvel Land, it apparently worked out.
