Yeah, the only bit that was doofy was the pumping him up to be as Hogan, Flair or Andre.

They didn't need to hype him up to show how far he fell. Cause damn that is one hell of a fall.

While Hall wasn't Hogan-level famous, he was an integral part of one of the biggest stables/angles of all time. Plus, he was arguably the best worker of all of the principles.

As an aside, I should mention that Hall's relationship with his son as portrayed near the end of the show has already crashed and burned due to his continuing addiction issues.
