Jet Bin Fever - 2011-12-19

Never a clip more worthy of a "what hell sounds like" tag.

chumbucket - 2011-12-19

A Gyorgy Ligeti orchestral piece.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2011-12-19

Oh poop on a stick I think I just submitted this one in the hopper.

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-12-19

Afterwords, they had a nice reception with a grass and twig "all you can eat" buffet.

Dinkin Flicka - 2011-12-19

Translation: "AGGH I'm Starving To Death-- what? dear leader is dead?"

memedumpster - 2011-12-19

I'm glad there's one less god in the world.

Now I wish we Jehovah would die so we could watch Christianity do this.

EvilHomer - 2011-12-19

Take THAT, Sky God!

I wonder if North Koreans will spend the next few thousand years anticipating Kim's second coming?

memedumpster - 2011-12-19

If his kid is smart, he'll dress up like Elvis and skydive in shouting "I'm back, baby!"

Anaxagoras - 2011-12-19

Who will crush our wills and oppress our spirits now???

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-12-19

Hey, Sarah Palin has been out of work for awhile, she's always looking for a foot in the door. Do they have tryouts or auditions?

CIWB - 2011-12-19

God, it sounds so fake. I wonder if there's a general consensus on how many North Koreans actually buy into the state cult and how many play along so as to not get shot. Is an answer to that question even possible given the lack of access to ordinary people by the media?

The initial news coverage of individual North Koreans crying in the streets looked even more fake. Crying hysterically seems like a good way to avoid answering questions from someone with a camera about how sad you feel that the Great Leader is dead.

sosage - 2011-12-19

Tens of people weeping for this lunatic. I wonder how the slaves in Syberia are handling the news.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-12-19

Well Siberia has not had communism or gulags in at least 20 years so I imagine quite well.

CornOnTheCabre - 2011-12-19

i like how Siberia is always the go-to "worst place in the world" for most GOP candidates nowadays, despite being a pretty decent place to live relative to all of the other hellholes cropping up around the world.

Just listen to the debates, Santorum even said once that deporting illegal immigrants isn't that bad because it's "not like we're sending them to Siberia or anything." You know, because Mexico in its current state is a tropical island paradise in comparison to.. some place that's really cold, I guess.

it positively smacks of "I can't actually name any of the ACTUAL worst places on Earth, because my party has had an integral part in making them that way."

Cyberblah - 2011-12-19

Nice rant and all, but despite the unfortunate spelling Sosage is not pulling that out of his ass:

deadpan - 2011-12-19

Needs ACTING! tag.

jangbones - 2011-12-19

kingofthenothing - 2011-12-19

Somewhere Brian Blessed was off camera and his audio was cut, but he was yelling "CRRRYYYYYY MY HORSEMEN!!! CRYYYYY FOR YOUR VERY LIIIIVES!"

Albuquerque Halsey - 2011-12-19

IRL Bawww thread.

There, I said it.

FreeOJ - 2011-12-19

The west will surely pay for inventing heart attacks

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-12-19

They're all faking, and I laughed hysterically.

Eagerly awaiting for this to be spliced into the Jack and Jill trailer.

takewithfood - 2011-12-19

Everybody grieves in their own way. Except in North Korea.

Toenails - 2011-12-19

Jesus, I don't want to be there when these folks discover the internet.

Toenails - 2011-12-19

P.S. takewithfood's comment is fucking hilarious.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2011-12-19

All those saying that these guys are faking it need to read The Cleanest Race by B.R. Myers and realize just how convinced the lot of these people, especially in Pyongyang, are or, at the very least, how they manage to forgive their people's own shortcomings.

misterbuns - 2011-12-19

These poor people aren't even allowed to be honest about their misery.

Five stars!

Evilhead - 2011-12-20

0:58 "Who will drink all of the Hennessy!!?? Our country is in ruin!"

crojo - 2011-12-20

1:05 - even the Starfleet cadets are overwhelmed with grief.

gmol - 2011-12-20

I certainly do sense that at least part of the display of emotion is a sort of conditioned response that doesn't really come from the same vat of grief used for people that are close to you; a lot like what you see at televangelist event...

But the exact same thing happens in America as well (outside of televangelist events). Kids cried when Kennedy was shot (for the sake of evidence, look at some letters here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/witness/november/22/newsid_3211 000/3211055.stm).

Is this really any different?

William Topaz McGonagall - 2011-12-20

Yes, it's completely fucking different. One is a kid crying because someone they admired is dead. The other is a ritualized display of compulsory grief, a horrifying demonstration of how utterly insane cults of personality are, and proof that the stain Kim Jong-Il left on North Korea will remain for years to come.

gmol - 2011-12-20

In both cases I think it's an image that they admired. Neither kid had any idea as to what their leader's policies were (and what effects they had, read: Vietnam) or how great a husband either was.

I mean, just about any leader has some sort of personality cult around him (I think it would be hard to argue that JFK didn't have 'charisma').

Yeah, it's probably a lot better living in America, but I don't know how you could argue that children crying over dead leaders (whom they've never even seen in person) is anything other than ritualized displays of compulsory grief. Sure, it looks pretty exaggerated from the video, but the principle isn't really different.
