This is a country where all visiting foreigners are made to bring flowers, in public, to the statue of the original Dear Leader. It's hard to tell what's brainwashing, what's fear of worse things to come, and what's acting for the sake of not being shot or denied your daily ration of wood pulp.

It could be a bit of everything, these people have been told, almost since they were born, that the Kim's are gods among men. There's also the possibility of everyone going to the gulag if they don't cry as hard as possible.

When I think about how devoted people are to the organized religion model in my country, it makes the North Koreans being genuinely upset about his death seem more likely. Then as a bonus I think about how we react when a loved celebrity dies as well, then compare it to North Korea's cult of personality where Kim Jong Il wasn't just a celebrity or a really convincing politician...he made the damned sun rise and set.

I think it's the worst of the possible scenarios, but completely plausible.

The only way to distinguish these videos from any mega-church footage is the Jesus freaks' fashion sense is worse.

TimbolinoBilchard - 2011-12-23

How about "George C. Scott reacts to Kim Jong-Il's Death?"

What we really need is North Koreans reacting to the Jack and Jill trailer.

La Loco - 2011-12-23

But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-12-23

What I want to know is, where are the North Koreans react to North Koreans reacting to Kim Jong Il's death videos?

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-12-23

With all this outpouring of love and loyalty you'd think Kim was a football coach at Penn State.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-12-23

For you.

RockBolt - 2011-12-23

I got to break the news to my South Korean sister in law, she just said "Oh yeah, he'd been sick for a while. That's great"

CIWB - 2011-12-23

It looks like some of them are laughing at first.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-12-23

The lady at the end sounds likes she's saying "He made plenty of sandwiches... plenty of amazing sandwiches... and they were all pretty good."

My ear hears things in foreign languages.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-12-23
