I suppose I should say that I'm male before getting into this.
I used to identify as a "gamer" because it seemed like a succinct way of identifying that I play video games to people that don't, even though I buy about 2-3 games a year. However, someone once blew up at me for using the term (I think it was on here, and I think it was just because it was a pet peeve and they liked flying off the handle), and so I started paying more attention to how other people use the term and wow. It seems to have become this kind of gay-pride, fighting-against-bigotry-that-doesn't-exist-and-wouldn't-be-bigotr y-if-it-did mentality that other, imaginary people have. You don't see fans of movies calling themselves moviers or sports fans calling themselves footballies or whatever else. I have to wonder why some people who have this specific hobby feel such a need to be defiantly open about it.

Really, though, it's just a marketing ploy to get video game players to peer pressure each other into buying 5 or 6 brand new games a month.

sosage - 2011-12-21 Like Magnesium mentioned, it is definitely marketing gone insane. It's similar in strain to the punk/hip hop/rock/whatever-music-genre fans being "true" fans because they listen to all of it and can tell what the "true" chunks of "good" music are. Except it is an entire medium.
I call myself a gamer, to mean I am pretty into video games. Not so much that I am a falsely persecuted class in society, which is what makes the term embarrassing to use now days. More so than when it was just embarrassing being an adult playing with things designed for children.

Games seem to do better, which is something.

SkeletonMichelle - 2011-12-22 I don't think this video is very effective, but it's not about the experience of "gamers." It's about the experience of female gamers, and there is a particular kind of nastiness directed at them in online games. Really, it's crazy how often the presence of a woman in a Call of Duty match or a Halo match or whatever is met with "Make me a sandwich!" responses or vulgar sexual requests or what have you, so I think the concerns this video is trying (however ineffectively) to address are legit, and I don't think there's a parallel here to movies or sports or whatever.
