First thing we have to do is fix Congress. When Medicare was passed, there were 70 Democrats in the Senate; we have collectively allowed our ranks to thin to the point where we've typically held only a slim majority, if that. Even Obama's so-called filibuster-proof majority existed for no more than six months, and the crucial 60th vote was a guy who had campaigned against Obama. Those aren't the sorts of numbers that can pass truly progressive legislation.

We were one Democratic Senator away from a public option. We were maybe only five Democratic Senators away from single payer. It doesn't matter who your dream President is -- Bernie Sanders, Ralph Nader, Pinkie Pie -- if the numbers aren't there in Congress, things aren't going to get done.

The Democrats did better with Kerry in 2004 that the Republicans are doing here. And Kerry sucked.
