He's trying to defend this as satirical.

It's by the guy who did the evil sheep ad for Carly Fiorina.
Remember that? http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=74331

erratic - 2012-02-07
stupid ad, but not racist in any degree to get worked up over
|
goat - 2012-02-07 Are you kidding, or just horrible?
|
|
erratic - 2012-02-07 I'm serious and not horrible. I like to separate the real harm done to people because of racism from feigned-outrage-generators like this.
|
Vaidency - 2012-02-07 Yeah, you're right, this political candidate just produced and aired an ad that portrays a Chinese woman in a rice paddy cheerfully informing you in broken English that she's stealing your job in order to generate feigned outrage.
Because feigned outrage is really useful in getting people to vote for you.
Yes, this wasn't a sincere but clumsy attempt at race-baiting at all.
|
|
|
erratic - 2012-02-07 Vaidency, I agree that the ad is ridiculous but nobody has identified how it's actually hurting anyone. And sorry, Pompoulus, I've never seen 16 candles so I don't get your reference.
|
Vaidency - 2012-02-07 The ad vilifies Asians by portraying them as preying upon a weakened America. It was run in Michigan.
"Michigan has seen its share of Asia bashing, especially in the 1980s, when images of sledgehammers smashing imported cars were common. Chinese-American Vincent Chin died after being beaten to death in 1982 by two unemployed autoworkers angry about competition from Japan."
But yeah, stirring up anti-Asian sentiments for political reasons doesn't hurt anybody, right?
|
simon666 - 2012-02-07 erratic: Go search Google News regarding this ad, then tell us if you think nobody has felt hurt by this ad. If you need some empirical evidence for people being hurt, fucking go investigate and see if there is any instead of arguing from a place of ignorance. Just sayin'.
|
Pompoulus - 2012-02-07 That's cool, don't sweat the reference, I think I see where you're coming from.
Erratic is trying to say that nobody is actually being physically hurt by this racist commercial, which is absolutely true because commercials are incapable of inflicting bodily injury.
You're right erratic. Racist ideas, when communicated, don't cause bruises or lacerations.
That's true.

Pope Caius - 2012-02-07 But I once called a fellow a nigger and his eyes exploded from his skull, before a swarm of rats came down upon him and devoured him clean to the bone.
And that's how you know that you're a grand wizard.

simon666 - 2012-02-07 The actress was born in America to two Chinese parents and the commercial was filmed in the California.

This is evil enough for 5 stars, but I honestly saw it going in a "me love you long time" direction.

I have to wonder about the actress. Lady, what the hell were you thinking?
... Never mind, I can guess what she was thinking: "Sucks, but I need the money." Okay, I guess I can't argue with that.

Pillager - 2012-02-07 She could be a republican....

|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-02-07 I'm kind of amazed they didn't ask Michelle Malkin to star. Sure, she's Filipino, but it's not like that seems to matter to either the makers or the target audience of this ad.

Yellow Peril!!
Seriously though, this asshole didn't someone around to tell him what a colossally stupid idea this was?
November will be amusing to say the least.
|
asian hick - 2012-02-07 To me, that's the most interesting and telling thing about this ad. Apparently not a single person involved in the campaign thought it was racist or offensive. That really says something about the people involved.
|
kingarthur - 2012-02-07
She looks like my girlfriend's sister, who works in Alabama and is a naturalized citizen and has had to undergo a lot of paranoid assumptions about her citizenship, despite the fact that she has no accent other than American.
|
kingarthur - 2012-02-07 Then again, she DOES work in HR for a large hotel chain and is directly responsible for recruiting foreign workers to fill out the housecleaning staff.....dunn dunn DUNN!

chumbucket - 2012-02-07
Really Pete? That's the best you can do?? Not only is it outwardly racist but the message is so pathetically low-brow catering to the fear-mongering selling out of Amurica to the "great evil Asia empire" bullshit.
Election campaigns have to be the absolute best reasons for throwing a perfectly good TV out a window.

StanleyPain - 2012-02-07
I like how we've reached this weird point in American history now where dipshit, oldie racists (like most politicians) think it's totally hip and grungified and tubular to be openly racist because THE KIDS SURE LIKE THOSE DAMN MEXICAN COMEDY PEOPLES or whatever because they're so phenomenally out of touch with the real world and think it somehow endears them to the public at large.
Also, it was discovered that the image file of this woman's picture on the website was named "yellowgirl.jpg" (not anymore, of course)
|
|
dek863 - 2012-02-07
"Yellow girl" in the html code of the video.
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/02/this-is-so -classy-yellow-girl/252685/
|
goat - 2012-02-08 THAT one I'm willing to believe was a coincidental reference to the color of her shirt. I mean honestly, we both saw the video, do you really think the people involved are capable of SUBTLE racism? If they wanted to insert one more racist thing into this whole production then the file name would've been more like meruvyourongtime.jpg.
|
dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-02-08
It's hilarious that a potential governor would put out an ad that's as immature and ignorant as this. I mean seriously? Are there really people who think everyone in China is walking around all like "HI ME LOVE YOU LONG TIME EGG ROH TWO NINTA NINE"? Nevermind, I already know the answer to that question.
But at first, I rolled my eyes. I was like "racist? pfff
...and then I went to Wikipedia:
"The ad is critical of government spending by Stabenow and mocks her name with the Asian woman saying “Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow". The commercial asks viewers to visit Hoekstra's website which has statistics about federal spending beside images of Chinese flags, currency and stereotypical Chinatown font. In the html code on Hoekstra’s site the woman in the ad is identified as “yellowgirl”, but a statement was released explaining that it was mistakenly shortened from “yellowshirtgirl”
Haha, "mistakenly shortened". Right.
The worst thing about it to me though, is that the woman is clearly a born and raised, English speaking American who sucks at acting. Someone who doesn't fit a racial stereotype poorly trying to act it out in a serious manner...is incredibly awkward.
