R-Type.

Now nobody can make a joke about it.

"You know the Captain isn't going to like this, Data."

"I have an idea, you shall make the android hair look like a character from the Little Rascals, and I shall concoct a story about differing part numbers, together I calculate a 75%..."

"Shh, Data, here he comes! How's this look?"

"Suitably wacky, Commander."

Syd Midnight - 2012-03-06

Its been so long since I've seen TNG that wasn't an edit that I immediately assumed it was a "Data makes a creepy art project" clip, so Rikers angry concern and Picards exasperation made the first few seconds exquisite. Like he's getting chewed out for performing brain surgery on his spare head right in the middle of engineering and someone had to alert the bridge because they need to use that console but they're too scared to tell him to move.

Meerkat - 2012-03-04

Man it's a fucking good thing Worf wasn't there. Ti'PAR is one of the most offensive insults in the language. He would have been honor-bound to headbutt Riker right in the head!

Anaxagoras - 2012-03-04

But he would have missed and knocked himself out on the wall.

sosage - 2012-03-04

Worf would have heard Type R and immediately shown them pictures of his sweet 1998 Civic...and the crew would laugh because it would be slower than Data's head laying on a table.

MrBuddy - 2012-03-06

Dang, sosage beat me to it.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-03-04

Captain Picard clearly didn't vet his androids well enough before he had them steer his fucking command ship.

Monkey Napoleon - 2012-03-04

At least Data had productive functions. Ask yourself why they didn't just permanently dismantle the holodecks and turn the spaces into recreational areas that don't wig out and take over the ship, almost killing everyone on board every other episode.

Xenocide - 2012-03-04

SPOILER: This is actually Data's head. Because in this episode Data travels back in time to stop a group of alien ghosts from destroying 1880's San Fransisco with their secret weapon, a magic cane that turns into a snake. Data gets decapitated so they bury his head in a cave where he finds it 500 years later. But it's okay because Data had a spare head in his closet or something. The evil aliens are defeated by Mark Twain, who thinks this whole affair is just kooky.

EskimoSpy - 2012-03-04

The Wikipedia entry on this has important information as well:
"There is no evidence that [Samuel] Clemens and London ever met, or that Clemens ever traveled to the 24th century."

IrishWhiskey - 2012-03-04

In other words, when Futurama referenced this episode, they were actually less goofy.

Monkey Napoleon - 2012-03-04

You forgot to mention the part where Data stumbles across / enlists the help of the Enterprise's immortal alien bartender who just so happens to be chillin in 1880's San Fransisco 500 years before anyone on the ship has met her for the first time.

memedumpster - 2012-03-04

Picard etching a message into Data's brain with a metal file, in binary.

fluffy - 2015-09-05

Data doesn't have a spare head, he gets decapitated in the past and then they put the still fully-functional 500-extra-year-old head onto his freshly-decapitated body. Mass is conserved.

Of course they COULD have just tried putting the found head onto his body without going back in time and then caused a temporal paradox that would have also left him with a free head.

Herr Matthias - 2012-03-27

Someone, on another video, made the astute observation that TNG would eventually be seen as just as corny as the original Star Trek given enough time. And this video is evidence.

There is really nothing particularly extraordinary or outlandish about this scene, in context. And yet, there is just something strangely hilarious about the delivery of the lines.

oddeye - 2014-06-13

"TyyppAAARRRrrrr?!?!"

"Yes sir, Type-R."
