John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-06-24 The first videocassette I ever bought, before I even had a VCR. It came inexplicably wrapped up with "The Boy who could Fly, which, for good or ill, I never watched.
One thing I realized watching it this morning, was that, when I first saw "Blue Velvet" 25 years ago, the most familiar actor was Hope Lange, who played Sandy's mother and who had starred in yet another ridiculous supernatural sitcom in the late sixties.

I had seen Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider, but this guy looked nothing like that guy. I had never seen Kyle McLachlen, Laura Dern, Isabella Rosselini, all completely familiar to me now. Roger Ebert reports feeling sympathy for the actors in Blue Velvet, an odd reaction under any circumstances, but all the more so because this film apparently jump started a lot of careers.
Even at full screen, I honestly think that it looks better on YouTube than that VHS cassette I bought all those years ago. One of the most unforgettable moments from my first viewing, that amazing shot of Laura Dern emerging from darkness, (beginning at around 11:40) never really worked for me on the small screen before, no contrast. I've already downloaded an mp4 version using the Download helper plugin for firefox, and I expect that will look better still.

Unless you've got your own DVD or blueray or whatever, I recommend downloading your own mp4 file, just in case someone files a copyright claim against this. When I play my mp4 on my computer with LED monitor, fullscreen, it's better than my old VHS tape played on my TV. The sound is especially good. It's also wide-screen.
