Isn't just a typically well crafted David Fincher movie? Is all of this vitriol just a kneejerk reaction because of how many dumb minds it blew, or how many people said it was the best thing ever? I remember it being just a solidly-built and entertaining movie.

It's a very well crafted, very entertaining movie. The message is cheap and hollow, though, and people have attached themselves to it in droves. That's what irritates me about the movie.

It was a dumb movie with some fun moments that i forgot about 5 minutes after seeing it. Some years laters i enter the internet and find out people worship this thing. It was quite the cultural shock.

The reason I like Fight Club is because it's implicitly mocking the sort of people who like Fight Club too much.

The people who join are trying to emulate a hallucination, they are made to feel powerful by the words of someone who doesn't really exist, and because they're made to feel powerful, they're willing to obey unconditionally.

Unwind the structure and it's about an insane cult leader building an army out of people who are so unable to find meaning in their own lives that they'll follow a charismatic lunatic, who is following his own hallucination of what freedom and masculinity mean.

Fight Club reminds me of Falling Down in that respect, in that a lot of the people who really like it, miss the fact that it's actually a scathing critique of the protagonist.

I'm not sure I agree that the movie is about that, but Edward Norton's character is the protagonist. Pitt's character is more of a Col. Kurtz.

Some of the themes in this film were more relevant for the state of society and the frustration of young adult males in the late 1990's. The Bush Jr. decade and the current 2010's have made some of those less timeless themes seem alien or irrelevant.

It's a good film for it's time and place in the world.

I always felt Fight Club was rather confused about what it wanted to be, at moments it feels like it's a critique of all these mindless doofus emulating a guy that doesn't even exist, then it seems it's celebrating their stupidity. Falling Down was far more clear about this, D-FENS was never portrayed as a glamorous character, neither what he did. His rampage always felt one from a man that was in a constant state of confusion. There's no catharsis in what he does, he's just hitting whatever steps in his way. When D-FENS and Robert Duvall meet, there's no Pixies song played while everythng falls down in slow-mo. D-FENS is gone and nobody will remember him, yet at the end of Fight Club it feels like a glorification of everything a guy with mental problems and his little cult did to "fight da man"

Yeah. Riskbreaker sums up my thoughts pretty well. Throughout the movie, and especially the end, it seemed to be an endorsement of its shallow anti-commercialism / quasai-anarchist message.

I would never accuse Falling Down of being a better movie than Fight Club, but it is much more clear and, depending on how you interpret Fight Club, moral.

Yes. I don't know if you'd call it vitriol. How much can I hate a movie I've never seen? It's more like a wall I can't breach. Whatever it is, it's pure prejudice

It's a great film based on a good book. Even Chuckie P admitted that the film better captured his message than his book.
