WELCOME TO TAX-OPIA, POPULATION: YOUR MONEY! MUEHEHEHE

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-09-14

The guy playing the president is Ray Wise, who also played the president in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. So, this is sort of like him bookending his role as presidents from one political extreme to another.

He was also one of Clarence J. Boddicker's henchmen. I'm a fan of the guy.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-14

He killed Laura Palmer.

poorwill - 2012-09-14

He is also amaaaaaaazing in Twin Peaks as Laura Palmer's dad.

poorwill - 2012-09-14

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2012-09-15

He was also the best Devil this side of Tom Waits and Danny Elfman, so he has experience

cognitivedissonance - 2012-09-14

So... the financial failure of the previous one should've cemented its inherent inferiority as a meme that was not immediately exalted by the Invisible Hand of the Market, right?

Cena_mark - 2012-09-14

They're attempting to ride pre-election anti Obama sentiments. I'm surprised they didn't cast a black man to play the president.

cognitivedissonance - 2012-09-14

So what you're saying is... money is only the defining salvation of a thing if it's a thing we all agree on anyway, right?

Cena_mark - 2012-09-14

They're trying to make a statement and in film the statement can't be made if hardly anyone sees it. Ticket and DVD sales = money and influence.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-09-14

They are making a statement. According to the box office take, that statement is, at best, "we live in a fantasy land" and at worst "we're delusional sociopaths and all of our beliefs about how the world should work are privileged elitist bullshit."

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2012-09-14

This whole Ayn Rand thing seems to be a distinctly US phenomenon. I had never heard of it until I got all up in the internets recently. But when I encountered it, it was very confusing/worrying...
Ok so a load of people are basing various socio/economic policies on a book?... a fictional novel!!?.. written by a novelist without any data or anything!??? ... aaaagghh!!

cognitivedissonance - 2012-09-14

It's happened before. It's said that the Civil War wouldn't have happened if the North hadn't read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the South hadn't read "Ivanhoe".

Cena_mark - 2012-09-14

Art is beyond entertainment. It both reflects and influences culture.

Xenocide - 2012-09-14

It's highly doubtful that Uncle Tom's resulted in the war. It may have sped it up by a couple of years or so, but it was going to happen either way.

Lincoln, who was far more of a smartass than people give him credit for, greeted the author of the book when he first met her by saying "so you're the little woman who caused this great war!"

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2012-09-14

Cena ..... what?

memedumpster - 2012-09-15

Wow... I think I would have literally slapped Abraham Lincoln if I had been her.

Meerkat - 2014-09-14

Wouldn't be the first time.

All the stuff I've read about CEO-types is that their complete detachment from humanity is shocking. Like, they tend to send their children to learning academies, never read books for pleasure, can't do simple math, can't cook food, don't know how to drive, etc. They seem to live in a world of isolation that's unfathomable for a well adjusted, normal human being.

Naturally, we should look to them for policy advice.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-14

It's estimated that most of them are psychopaths. Modern psychology has come so far. Unfortunately our society has not caught up and done anything about it. This is not a comforting post.

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-14

I know for a fact that the CEO of IBM has severe brain damage from a motorcycle accident in the mid 80s and can't retain anything for more than 10 to 15 minutes.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-14

wankwankwankwank

THIS RICH WHITE LADY WON'T BE A SLAVE ANYMORE DO YOU HEAR

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-14

Also, I think it bears sharing that I had the song "We Don't Care" by MGMT stuck in my head while I was watching this.

Old_Zircon - 2012-09-14

Wow, insult to injury, eh?

StanleyPain - 2012-09-14

It takes nearly 3 hours to read John Galt's monologue out loud, so I'm curious how they handled that in the film.

jangbones - 2012-09-14

they probaby stretched it to four hours

Sanest Man Alive - 2012-09-16

For you.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-09-14

Quite hilariously, I find that _I_ am John Galt. How about that? And what's more, were the true history of my motor to be known, it was the wealthy capitalist Guggenheim who was responsible for our last 80 years of fossil fuel misery. The things you learn on a goofy video sharing message board, eh?

GuyCorngood - 2012-09-14

Going by the trailers and imdb, it seems they recast every single role. What an interesting artistic experiment.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-14

I didn't notice that, but that is HILARIOUS.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-14

You know, I believe that back when Ayn Rand was writing ATLAS SHRUGGED, the taxation rate on the rich was pretty shocking, something like 90 per cent. I'm not getting this from FOX NEWS. My sources on this are Al Franken and someone speaking on ALTERNATIVE RADIO.

I'm saying that this may have had a certain validity fifty years ago, as a critique of contemporary policies. Based on what I know (I haven't read it) it might even be considered prophetic as a prediction of the current "FUCK YOU" policies of the GOP, as a backlash against the New Deal.. But it's really being misused and misinterpreted by the TEA PARTY and others who just don't know or want to pretend that we haven't seen 30 years of tax cuts and deregulation.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-09-14

Except you still had exemptions for expenditures on building your business. Made a factory? That's a tax credit. Hired more people? Okay, tax credit.

It was basically business expenses that were deductible when businesses actually made stuff, built stuff, and hired people. Now, they're one to five person outfits that play video poker with spreadsheets and make up new "products" that cause bubbles and sink the economy. They've used their money to decrease their tax rates to far below 15%. They buy laws that favor them at the expense of just about the entire country.

And it seems to escape everyone's notice that even with higher tax rates, there wasn't really a shortage of people trying to be and becoming rich. There was also a thriving middle class, more social services, better public education, etc.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-14

Well, I can't speak to the state of corporate welfare in 1957, and I'm not suggesting that Ayn Rand was correct in her analysis. I'm suggesting that, 50 years ago, there may have been some relationship to reality. I'm suggesting that, ATLAS SHRUGGED may have spoken to Ayn Rand's time, but it doesn't speak to our time, at least not in the way that is being suggested.

Konversekid - 2012-09-14

Her entire philosophy is a bitter response to socialism, in which she regresses to exactly what the socialists were trying to fight. I don't think their is really any credit deserved on her part.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-09-15

Yes. Exactly, Konversekid. Exactly. She traded in one form of fascism for another and didn't notice any problem with a few people making decisions for all of humanity with a hugely unbalanced proportion of resources going for those few. Fuck her dead stupid corpse and the bloated egos of her willing followers, most of whom do not benefit from those ideals once they latch onto them.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-09-16

One other thing on that 90% figure: That's the tax rate for an amount of money over a certain threshold. Let's say the tax rate is 90% on income over million, but only 60% at million and then 30% at million. You're only paying 90% on million. You're still bloody effing rich, and that's before you devote that 90% million to something that gets a tax break.

Not to mention we're talking dollars when a dollar could buy you a decent meal.

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-09-14

The John Galt Supremacy

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-09-14

The only thing I'm crediting her with is having more intellectual integrity than Paul Ryan, and we all know that ain't much. She may also have been a reasonably talented science fiction writer. I really wonder how many people lionizing and demonizing ATLAS SHRUGGED have actually read this cinder block of a book. I have not. I may be about to take a stab at an audio version.

>>Her entire philosophy is a bitter response to socialism, in which she regresses to exactly what the socialists were trying to fight.

Agreed. Somebody made a reference to Ayn Rand elsewere on this site, and referred to the individual as being limited to a single point of view. That seems like Ayn Rand all over. I don't know anything about her life in Riussia, but she seems to be reacting to Stalinism. That's her point of view, and she's limited by it. I've heard her speak of her philosophy, and I don't agree at all.

To me, she looks like an eccentric, self-important, self-promoting artist. She seemed to take herself way too seriously, and even if she didn't, acting like she did was undoubtedly good for the business of being Ayn Rand. Without having read her, I'm sort of reminded of Nietzsche. In that analogy, the Republicans would be Nazis.

memedumpster - 2012-09-15

Nietzsche would have said that Ayn Rand instituted slavery based upon the human drive to be a slave, and the proper response would be slaughter all the Randroids to attain actual humanity.

Or at least that's what I'm going to tell people, because they're both dead now and can't stop me.

Paracelsus - 2012-09-14

I will say it's a nice piece of misdirection. It's not multinational corporations that own and control you; it's the gubmint! Fight the gubmint!

Problem with this is that it intellectualizes fear, greed, and stupidity.

Nyms Lives! - 2012-09-15

1:46 - 1:50 - "I've only got one thing left fighting for. This haircut!"

Meerkat - 2014-09-14

I thought he was insinuating he wants some head.

Binro the Heretic - 2012-09-16

"I've created a machine that will end dependence on fossil fuels. We must keep it out of the hands of the people because they don't deserve it. Now, let's destroy all the remaining fossil fuels and hide ourselves and the machine. That will teach those bastards not to demand a living wage!"

Seriously, in any other movie John Galt would rightly be recognized as the villain. James Bond would be gunning hard for this prick before he could destroy the world.
