Funny story with Software Etc. actually. It was the computer retail spin-off of the (also now defunct) B. Dalton Booksellers, a fine mall-based literary salon. Then Software Etc. broke away and bought Babbage's (another mall-based computer retail chain) The combined chains went tits up not long after that, and tried to sell the company off with no success and the stores were about to all be closed when an investor rode to the rescue who then turned Babbages Inc into the chain gamers know and love, GameStop. Gamestop was bought by Barnes & Noble, who had bought B. Dalton Booksellers earlier, and Gamestop broke away from Barnes & Noble, casting aside the last named Software Inc. And this is the abridged version of this retail epic. And I sing you this Mall Skald.

I remember when Software Etc. was just rear part of the B. Dalton stores where I got Commodore 64 games. Ahhh..memories.

Same here. I first played Out of This World in a Software Etc. that existed in the back of the bookstore.

Funfact about Egghead: they decided to close all of their stores in the late 90's in order to go completely online, hoping they would be able to corner the new world of e-commerce. It wound up being a disaster with sales numbers dropping by a ridiculously large number (I was once told by 90%). Amazon.com absorbed whatever was left several years later. I remember a lot of dot-com era meetings where people would creatively try to alter reality and make Egghead out as a success story, usually followed by pushing their "the future is online and retail is dead" business plan.

The 'retail is dead' is absolutely true...for very select products. Specifically software and movies, especially rentals. Most other things you want to walk out of the store with.

I like how the owner of the company is not even talented enough to remember a few lines of dialogue for his own training video, so he just openly reads off a script.
