Strangely, the uploader mutes the opening narration. Those interested can hear it in the first of this somewhat lower quality, multipart version here :

Fucking yes. M.R. James is awesome. It's hard to get through a lot of his stuff, especially when the cockney characters are talking to each other... but it's always really rewarding.

This YouTube account has a ton of MR James adaptations, most of which are nearly impossible to find since he uses weird characters for the titles, presumably to avoid copyright detection. I luckily stumbled across this one while looking for something else.

Oh yes, watched this one ages ago and it was very effective (certainly more effective than some radio adaption I listened to years ago that undercut what atmosphere it had built up by stopping just short of having the 'ghost' go 'AH BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA! BLAH!'

The BBC remade this in 2010 but, in my opinion, they kinda messed it up. They modernized it so that it's a retired astronomer (John Hurt) haunted by the spirit of his wife who he had to commit to an institution for dementia, which doesn't really make sense in the context of the story and fails to really make it a ghost story since she's still alive. It's not awful, but it's basically just taking a sort of creepy short story and slapping the title on it in an attempt to connect the two.

The acting in this is perfect, what a great story.
