Wow. Superman really can do the impossible.

I dunno, I have to at least give him props on doing a new take on the character and not Singers nonsense of rehashing/continuing the Donner films.

I'll give it a shot though if only for Nolan's involvement, though admittedly after DKR, while a good movie, the more i think back to that film, the more certain things bug me that didn't upon initial viewing *shrugs*.

Now I'm cautiously optimistic about this, wished they would have used Mongul instead of Zod, but w/e guess its better than Luthor again.

Yeah, I don't care about any of that. Snyder's heavy-handed (and I'd say shallow) visual style just irritates me, and I haven't liked any of his films. The shot at 2:10 with the tanks and whatnot strikes me as the most distinctly Snyder-ish part of the trailer, if you want a concrete example. It seems like it would be at home in a North Korean propaganda poster.

It'll be better than Singer/Donner Superman, but it'll probably not be a terribly good Superman movie:

1. It's too fucking dark. Batman is the dark and moody hero, not Superman. This is just going to make the Justice League movie a grimdark-fest. If you want everyone moody and depressed, make a goddamn Sandman movie.
2. Oh, yay, ANOTHER FUCKING ORIGIN MOVIE! Yes, he does appear to fight someone, but we don't need yet another movie dealing with how Superman came to be. Everyone knows, even those in utero. It's in our fucking DNA by now, people!
3. That's the worst Pa Kent portrayal ever. Yes, he wants to protect his adopted kid, and he always told him to be careful, but he was Clark's moral compass, not his moral weather vane.

I really think a DCU film series could work, if they'd just give it some time, thought, and not have it try to jump right into "The Avengers" territory so quickly. I don't know how they pick the scriptwriters for this stuff, but it never seems to be anyone who actually understands how and why the DC heroes have become iconic.

At least they didn't make a Wonder Woman movie. The script ideas they floated for that monstrosity were worse than the 1970's TV show.

Agreed on the origin story aspect, at this point if you don't know the superman story, you probably wouldn't care which way this film goes anyways.

Judging by DC's recent film entry's, I have a strong feeling the Justice League film is going to be just awful. Unless its Superman or Batman, DC hasn't the first clue how to handle their superhero properties on film, Green Lantern being a great example.

A character like that could work very fucking well, both as a superhero flick and sci fi movie, and it did neither.

I can see what Nolan and Zack are trying to do, going a more Sci Fi route, which is interesting, just looks too dark and not out there/colorful enough in parts.

I'd prefer they not attempt a DCU movie. Superheroes always seem less special to me once you decide that they all live next door to each other. One of the cool things about the original Superman films was the idea that he was the one great hope of the world. Superman seems less, well, super if there's fifty other flying guys he can call in to cover his shift for him.

Xeno: It's a double-edged sword, but the reason why a lot of superheroes seem so ridiculous, Superman included, is because there's nobody around to equal them. Without other beings to go toe-to-toe with, they're just freaks. I'd even like a Lex Luthor-centric movie, but only if they made him the machiavellian techno-genius of the comics (and animated series) instead of a real estate con-man clown.

It's why Superman II is the best of the Donner films for a lot of people, even with a lot of the loopy things that got tossed in (like that cellophane S at the end). At least Superman got to fight someone who was a threat.

I am a fan of the origin stories, because they are key to the viewer siding with the hero. Plus it's part of setting up the premise and themes of the movie.

People love the Donner "Superman" movie, but there was really only one part I liked: the scenes in Smallville, particularly with Clark wondering why he has to hide his abilities in ways nobody else has to. It was a good humanizing moment. Jonathan's response -- that whatever he was put on this earth for, it wasn't for scoring touchdowns -- was delivered in reassuring, kind tones that helped us see how Clark could grow up into a decent guy. But THIS Superman ... ? I've got my doubts.

I'm surprised anyone defends the superhero crossover stuff, since the whole point of it is a marketing ploy.

The whole subtext of superheroes is isolation from the rest of society. X-Men works as a group because of that. Superman and Batman hanging out? Not so much.

@Hooker: Yeah its a marketing ploy, but isn't Comics as a whole? some of my favorite storylines involved other characters with their own separate comics being involved in another characters comic. there are villains that are not mutually exclusive to just one hero, look at Doctor Doom, hes fought countless Marvel hero.

Yeah its a marketing ploy, but for the most part I like the crossover stuff. Some of us dig the idea of a universe with all these connected characters, as since that's how it is naturally in the comics, why not on film? cynicism be damned, its all been awfully fun.

Hooker: The crossover stuff, at least with the Justice League and the Avengers is pretty standard for the comics. Those groups and their comics as a team have existed for decades. The Avengers did a very good job pulling it off and has the box office receipts and fan response to prove they did it well.

It also helps to have that larger universe, again, to help answer why if just ONE person showed up with superpowers, why the government isn't trying to lock that person in a lab and dissect them. If there are more, then there's really no specific reason to have someone out to grab Spider-Man and make wall-crawling drugs out of his blood or something. As a series goes on, having more heroes that can make the odd cameo also makes sense for when the threat becomes city-wide. If, in the DC Universe, a giant robot from space starts stomping a city, even if it's a movie about the Flash, I'd ask why Superman didn't show up and start helping to tear off its head.

The main problem with the Justice League movie is that it IS a marketing ploy first and foremost to compete with Marvel's success. Unfortunately, they're not giving themselves the build-up they need to pull it off, I think. Rather than having a series of successful films about (at least) Batman and Superman that continue their continuity, they're just tossing them and a bunch of other characters together, hoping it does well, then rebooting Batman's franchise, making the Nolan films moot.

DC needs to stick with animation. It does that really well with its superheroes.

RE: The fact that's is yet another retelling of Superman's Origin.

That's basically all he has. Superman is so fucking boring that his coming of age where he's able to unite his alien nature and his human upbringing is the only thing interesting about him.

It's basically the same problem as with Luke Skywalker or any other hero who has completed the Hero's Journey: what can he do for an encore? Except in Superman's case, his journey is completed pretty early in the game, by about the time he has become a beloved public figure and the bad guys know about kryptonite.

Yeah I'm not too broken up about the origin story bit. Like it or not, new kids are born every day, and for a lot of them this movie will be how they learn about Superman and his origin story. Just like many kids learned about it from Christopher Reeves and not George Reeves.

I think we're just going to accept that these series will continue to give us an origin and 2-3 sequels before we get another origin story for the next generation.

The origin is often a big part of what makes these characters interesting, not just Superman. As said above, it's the first act of the hero's journey. People are naturally drawn to that narrative and that's what makes these things successful.

Also I think this might be decent. You can't deny that Superman looks pretty good with a beard.

It makes sense that he'd be brought up a Republican. Leaked copies of the script say the first 15 minutes of Superman in Metropolis is an extended comedy sequence where he's confronted by city dwelling liberals.

NERD TIME: Akira Toriyama consciously set out to create the "Eastern Superman" with Goku. The whole Vegita storyline of DBZ is a deliberate homage to Superman II.

That's kind of neat. I'd heard Dragonball was based on A Journey to the West, but I watched that show and read that story in two completely different epochs of my life, so I don't know. I immediately thought "Vegeta" when I saw Zod though.

I did not know that, awesome! How do later villains like Freeza and such fit into that then? I know he never planned for the story to continue after that saga so I wont bother Cell and especially majin buu bullshit.
