This one finally let me put a finger on what it is that puts me off of most of their stuff. They drag the sketches out. We all got the joke a third through the sketch, but then it keeps going with no new joke.
Timeslot requirements are the bane of comedy. Padding ruins a good joke like nothing else.
Exactly right. These are decent jokes, it's just that they beat them to death. Then they often finish with some sort of deus ex machina.
They are half way there, and I think they might get better with time, but yeah, they just go too long per joke.
I agree. They have some really good ideas, but I'm aware of the whole premise right away, and then they just drag it on.
It's too bad they have a certain amount of time they have to fill. Maybe they'll figure it out and get better.
Jet Bin Fever
Yeah, absolutely. It's the curse of almost all sketch comedy. The payoff is quick and unfulfilling and the jokes don't progress. Compare that to the shampoo marijuana sketch from Mr. Show or "Daddy drank..." from Kids in the Hall just as a few exceptions.
I think you guys are so critical of the "concept" of a piece of humor, that you are missing the execution. Comedy is part concept, part performance.
I mean, it's essentially the "Black Knight" concept, but the performance of trying to disarm and pretend to catch bullets was still funny (to me). The only unfunny part of this was the last scene where he should have just drove away leaving him crawling on the porch claiming he was alright. Shooting him in the head definitely felt like "ending a sketch frustration".
Shooting in the head is definitely the laziest way to end a sketch. It's way too over used, but ending sketches can be tough and it does still get a laugh.
They also fall prey to overusing the rule of 3s sometimes, like SNL does in every skit. 3 confused reactions to being rejected, 3 tests of his abilities, 3 gunshots. It's not as bad as SNL's formula of having 3 characters tell the same joke slightly different 3 times and then ending the sketch but it does make it feel more contrived.
Still this made me laugh quite a few times despite the cheap shots.
