Aelric - 2012-12-16 No Child Left Behind also had the unspoken consequence of ruining all hopeful teachers college careers. Traditionally, you would take your undergrad in your field as you discover what you want, such as mathematics of the sciences, then you would continue on to a masters in teaching (MIT). No child left behind required that in order to get your MIT, you needed to specialize in education no later than your second semester in undergrad, taking almost nothing my the pre-reqs for the next level in either education or child psychology, THEN largely repeat the same scenario in your MIT program, giving little to no time to become an expert in the actual field you would teach. To top that off, if you had already graduated or almost had when the new laws came into effect, you needed to start your entire undergrad over from the beginning.
To make matters even worse, even after your MIT, you had to jump through whatever hoops the state set up, including addition and costly training, certifications and hours logged working for nothing. ALL THAT, just to work in a job that will pay poorly (This guys 70K is a FAR above average salary, even after yearly raises for his whole career) until the day you lose your retirement. And folks still do it, and they are awesome and they can't catch a break. It's why I just went to Korea and Thailand to teach, and only tutor now. I can't afford the time or money required to be a real teacher, thanks to Bush's silent legacy of stupidity.

No, good sir, thank YOU for sharing. I knew it was bad, but hearing it from someone who experienced it day in day out... just... wow. I can't imagine the helplessness one feels in attempting to correct at least some of the damage the new system has done, only to be strictly told "Oh, you're not allowed to do that." WTF?

Occasional pang of survivors guilt, but in the end happier. And for him, that isn't running away, either. He already spent his career helping kids. He earned his rest.

Toenails - 2012-12-16 My school has their classes get two recesses and one lunch. They are all 15 minutes each, but fortunately we get a fruit and veggie snack program that will give the kids another 5 to 10 minute break.

Just a lowly Para in a Special Education class, but yeah I witness everything this former teacher talks about.
A lot of my job entails bring my kiddos into Gen Ed classes for portions of the day so they can socialize with their peers and get use to routines that don't happen in our Structural classroom, mainly receiving and completing homework (our kids range from children with extremely low functioning autism, to children with moderate physical and learning disorders). So I do see kids struggle with answering questions and teachers struggle with balancing the need to teach with the time crunch of getting them able to pass a test.
My school, for instance, has all the teachers I've visited with scrub out their time allotted for Science because they need to re-address Reading and Math lessons because that's what they are being tested on. This makes me wonder why our State Board of Education is currently trying to encourage time for cursive handwriting.

Seriously guys, science and social studies are being pushed out of class time because reading and math have became these fucking beasts you need to feed, and our board's all like... yeah cursive, people still need to sign checks I guess.

I never met a teacher worth a damn until they shipped me off to a Montessori. I'd be lying if I denied that as a teenager I fantasized about killing the non-Montessori teachers. But OH! The Montessori ones I'd have happily killed FOR.
This is mainly why I fear having kids... I'd not be able to pay for an education for them that wouldn't result in absolute clock-punching stultification on every mental, physical, spiritual and ethical point. I wish teachers well but I suspect if they really did care as much as they say they do, they'd have mass-walk-outs from coast to coast. Plus it doesn't help that every teaching major I ever encountered in college was a C student at absolute best.
