This is what the divide over "legitimate rape" is about. A lot of people believe that the REAL rapists are the guys in the bushes that attack strangers. The vast majority of rape involves people the victim knows personally, often people they are or are trying to become romantically involved with. Date rapists don't really need to spike a girl's drink. Alcohol itself is the most commonly used date rape drug. For a lot of people, this is all a huge gray area. They tend to blame women for the things that men do to them so in their minds the responsibility is always shared.
This is that rape culture thing you've been hearing about. The vast majority of rapes do not get reported because they know that if they make an allegation, a large number of people will just dismiss them and call them sluts and any girl that isn't willing to get the same treatment will at best position themselves on the fence. If you ever use the word slut pejoratively then you are one of these people.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2012-12-26 I really got into CrimeTV before it went down the shitter as TruTV. There were great documentaries about the mind of criminals. What kept repeating over and over again was the person who would rape or otherwise harm you was a person you knew and trusted. I wish more people knew that and get the idea of "scary (black) man in the bushes want to corrupt the women" out of their skulls.

Haha, my dad is from there. We used to drive up every Christmas for the weekend to see my grandparents.
Steubenville was a big coal town back in the day. There were so many coking plants that at night the sky would glow orange and sometimes cinders would fall like snow on a cold day. The landscape for miles in all directions around the city was a series of lakes from flooded strip mines and flooded fields that got all the water the hills could no longer hold.
Steubenville itself wasn't always a bad town. Up on a pleasant grassy knoll you were above the worst industrial devastation, and it was full of quaint ethnic neighborhoods. Steubenville attracted miners from all over Europe; it was one of the first integrated city school systems in America and boasted huge populations of exotic peoples like Serbs and Lithuanians.
Because EVERYONE in town was a working class immigrant, they all got along pretty well and a huge good-old boy culture developed. The whole town was rife with illegal gambling and prostitution and every weekend the cops would raid all the uptown hotels where this happened. Locals got a ride to jail and were immediately released; out-of-towners could pay the cops 25 bucks to walk too, or spend the night in jail and get their names in the paper's Vice column. Everyone from the mayor to the coal execs to the hobos were all on graft of some kind, like a crazy parody of 1920s new York. Most folks had steady work and lots of friends and didn't much mind that their city was an industrial monoculture with some of the most entrenched governmental corruption in the Nation.
By the mid-90s, most of the strip mines were exhausted. It turned out that there wasn't much deep mining to be had in the area, and since it didn't pay to coke or make steel far from a supply of coal, industry started pulling out. Suddenly the big happy city full of blue-collar crooks had no major source of employment or taxable revenue. As often happens the younger folk of the city began to segregate on racial lines. Some pretty nasty gangs put down roots, then the KKK moved in to try and play off the paranoia of the older citizens about the angry young folk. Visit the city today and it's a rapidly emptying string of slums winding around hospitals, malls, and theaters that were top-of-the-line in the early 80s and haven't been updated since. The mayor, once a wealthy potentate who was paid his real income under the table now struggles to put down the crime his office once encouraged, while the few families not actively trying to leave eke out a poor existence, many of them driving miles away to other communities to work.
The one winner in all of this is nature; the strip mined areas are recovering into wetlands and scrub pretty nicely. You can tell development happened at one time, but the countryside is no longer the blasted wasteland it once was.

Boomer The Dog - 2012-12-26 That's a cool history on Steubenville, good writing. I'm from Pittsburgh and get my info mostly from documentaries like Rick Sabak would do on PBS.
I like the beautiful murals on the buildings, something I always see when I go there. I have a friend who lives in Wintersville near enough to the city.
