I remember the heydays before the cable censors cared about stuff like this.
Comical suicides, characters in blackface, and the "Aunt Jemima" housekeeper in Tom and Jerry are all fond memories that my yound mind couldnt fully grasp at the time.
That and I had no idea who Peter Lorre was back then either.
I don't know about comical suicides, or Mammy Two Shoes (the black lady in Tom and Jerry) but you still won't ever see a classic Merry Melodies/Looney Tunes/etc, or any classic cartoon for that matter, uncut with blackface/racial caricatures, on American television. I believe they finally released a bunch of them on DVD here a few years back though.
I never really got the Mammy Two Shoes editing actually. She talked in an old southern stereotypical dialect, but aside of that I don't really see where the controversy was. I mean, she owned the house after all. It's not as if she was a maid or something.
Hell, if the voice was so bad, they should have redubbed Disney's Dumbo decades ago. But then, Disney movies are allowed a certain level of racism that nothing else is (see Peter Pan).
