Whenever people talk about how marriage is thousands of years old I get pissed off. Marriage is about 400 years old. Prior that love wasn't a part of it. Thousands of years ago it was basically this: the purchase of a 12 year old girl from her father as a sex slave.
Fun Fact: In most states, marital rape wasn't outlawed until the 80s.

Only about 100 years ago the average age of consent in the US was twelve, in Delaware nine, the child's consent wasn't needed for them to get married, the woman's legal rights were controlled by the husband, and there wasn't such thing as marital rape. There are many Congressmembers still today who think marital rape doesn't exist as a concept, since the marriage means she can't say no.
There have been better definitions of marriage than that in history. It wasn't always the case that women were property, gays couldn't marry, and that children had no say. There are clear propagators of bad morals which overwhelmed these practices, many of them carrying a sword and a holy book, with the latter doing more damage.

Everything I've ever read about Colorado City is fucking horrifying and unconstitutional as hell. How it's managed to become what it is (a city owned and ran by a cult, which defies both state and federal laws, and flat out ignores the civil liberties of anyone who's not a part of their cult), and stay that way for decades, is absolutely bonkers to me.

IrishWhiskey  - 2013-02-12 The same is true in Clearwater, Florida for Scientology. And for towns across the country (predominantly the south, but not only) when it came to imposing religious laws and bigoted norms in violation of federal law.
This is the reason people like Ron Paul claim that government power is a threat, but then defend unlimited rights of state governments to violate basic freedoms. Why he thinks the government protecting the civil rights of minorities is a grave offense to liberty, but states deciding to knock down bedroom doors and police what kind of sex they are having is fine. Why he thinks it's wrong for the federal government to tell schools they must let kids pray to whoever they like, but not for state governments to tell schools to force kids into a religion.
Because it's not actually about "liberty", it's about creating these mini-fiefdoms where their own person visions hold sway without compromise or consideration for others. Small government is a legitimate position, that's being used primary to try and justify abuses of powers like these, whether from Mormons, Scientologists, Christians, or private enterprises and financial interests.

This documentary is focused less on personal testimony and more on the police and town politics, and so compliments "Banking on Heaven".
It illustrates the problem of living in a town where young boys are made destitute and homeless, and young girls are forced into polygamist marriages at 16 (The age of consent in Arizona is 18) and impregnated as soon as possible to minimize the risk of them leaving and jeopardizing the husbands ascent into the highest tier of heaven. Since all the cops are polygamists, reporting statuary rape achieves nothing, especially when the rapist is a cop.
Why the Arizona state courts are so slow to respond (if at all) is perhaps something that someone here might be able to elaborate on.
