Love the pedestrians going about their business.

"Pfui. Under Stalin, you would be lucky to be hit with meteorite. And is nothink compared to Tunguska. Kids these days..."

How many doomsday cults have glommed onto this, do you think? And will there be a massive freak-out when they hear about the asteroid passing within satellite orbit of Earth today?

StanleyPain - 2013-02-15

I do know there's already a lot of Christian nuts saying this was a message from God, etc.... Not like anyone expected any different.

CornOnTheCabre - 2013-02-15

there isn't exactly a defined movement behind it that I know of, but I read an article on The Atlantic 4-5 days ago about how the Year of the Snake (Chinese Zodiac) has historically been a horrible year for Russia.

Doomsday Cults aren't savvy enough to pull pertinent, scientific facts together to support Moon Jesus & The 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse returning to burn us all in a cleansing fire. They just claim God spoke to them in a dream and point at some version of the Old Testament until your pockets are empty.

Imagine living in the ancient or medieval world and trying to make sense of seeing something like that.

The primitive mind would dismiss it just another mystery of the world, like sneezing or thunder. The modern mind battles with a world of possibilities ranging from weather to atomic warfare.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-02-15

Something like this would have ended up starting a religious war back in those days.

zerobackup - 2013-02-16

Yeah, my guess it would be no less frightening than volcanoes, earthqaukes, tornadoes and the like to a pre-modern person. We're the ones scared shitless of asteroid impacts because we are advanced enough to know that they can legitimately wipe us off the face of the Earth.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-02-16

You might be understating the fear pre-modern people had for those things.

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-02-15

Fun Fact: Chelyabinsk is part of Russia's nuclear complex.

Have fun imagining if this happened in the early '80s.

Oh.
