It's sad, and a little scary, to see how many kids coming up today have internalized the reactionary narrative of the RIAA and Friends. Just the other day, I was talking to this 19 year old college student who believes that file sharing is literally the same as stealing a car. It's even sadder, and scarier, to see certain companies quietly shifting the digital world away from the old idea of data and programs as products, stored and owned by individual computer users, to the idea of data and programs as net-based services, delivered to users on-demand through tightly controlled channels; thoroughly violating consumer ownership rights (which have historically been protected by the very same body of "copyright laws" that these companies are quick to champion, just so long as the interpretation favors their own business interests), and imposing ad hoc artificial scarcity on the world's first and only true post-scarcity market.

But we're still winning, so Metallica and Dre can suck one.

At this point, I feel like the rhetoric on both sides is mostly bullshit. The RIAA line is, of course, exactly what you said, but the "post scarcity market" has almost completely failed to live up to its promise, too.

At my last big corporate programming gig, one of the things we had to take a class on was the different forms of open-source copyright. The purpose of this course was for us developers to know when it was legal to take these software libraries, add them to our proprietary code base, and profit. The whole concept of producing value in a situation like that is such a shell game.

I think the gatekeeper business model is symptomatic of the same basic problem: the internet IS the collective intellectual property wealth of humanity. It's impossible to make it fit into the western tradition of property rights. Instead, you have firms figuring out places in the distribution process where they can legally claim said collective wealth, and that's what passes for a business model.
