Oddly enough I finished watching this movie like 10 minutes ago for the first time, and I was impressed. Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson) plays a particularly despicable character. This movie is definitely underrated.
Most critics are dissing this film as a drawn out SNL sketch because the writer used to work for SNL and is a close friend of Ferrell.
While watching this last night I felt that comparison was mostly unfair. There are a few bits that feel "sketchy" (no pun intended) but the film as a whole felt much more akin to something that Wes Anderson would make. The scenery is intentionally low-budget but it is ALWAYS artistically beautiful, and virtually every shot is engaging and interesting, the musical numbers are not just extremely funny but, you know, actually GOOD, and the whole production feels vibrant and like the product of a crew that is truly involved in making a funny film that they believe in rather than a quick cash in on some shitty franchise or a few famous names.
