I don't know if that would be easier, since this uses common parts and doesn't really require too much engineering (it's mostly software, it looks like you could build the mechanical part in a few hours, and you might need to write custom drivers to use one of those printers with a modern operating sytem - that was the reason I never restored the old arm-and-pens style plotter I used to have) but it would probably be a lot cheaper.
