I haven't been following the news much for the past few weeks and I expected this to be an apology for all the heart disease she caused.

Bort - 2013-06-21

I maintain there are various stripes of racism / bigotry, and Paula's version is the poorly-thought-out "he's different from me therefore he's a potential rival for resources" variety. No real animosity, just a big pile of dumb with second helpings.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-21

You have to admit, that seems like a very fitting form of bigotry for a shameless glutton.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-06-21

Apparently she has a whole line of flavored butters hitting shelves next week and General Foods has a LOT of money invested, so word came from those that own her soul to make the statement.

Gmork - 2013-06-21

Flavored butlers?

RocketBlender - 2013-06-22

I believe he's talking about what most steakhouses call 'compound butters'. Let a stick of butter sit at room temp until it's soft, then mix it with things like minced herbs, or carmelized onions and mushrooms, roll it in wax paper, and put it back in the fridge. It'll firm right back up to it;s normal consistency, and has all kinds of flavor. Fancier a la catre steakhouses will charge anywhere from -10 for a slice of that stuff on your steak.

They're honestly super easy to make and don't really need their own product line, but then again, so are clarified butter and hardboiled eggs, and you see that shit on store shelves too.

SolRo - 2013-06-22

Her making a line of flavored butter is so predictable/a joke gone too far/meta...I dunno, it hurts my brain trying to categorize it.

I guess the real question should be is what toppings will she put on a stick of that butter before serving.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-06-22

I think I'd like to see a "Shame and Bitterness" flavor.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-06-21

There's something oddly pleasing about seeing people like Paula Deen and Martha Stewart go down.

I will give her credit for honest though; she didn't hesitate to announce to the world that she calls blacks "niggers" on a regular basis because "I'm from the south yall, that just what we do!"

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-21

That's schadenfreude. It's watching someone who built their success around an overblown & completely fake image of wholesomeness having their real selves exposed.

pyslexic dharmacist - 2013-06-23

There are 2 types of Southerners: "that's just what we do" and "speak for yourself, you fucking waste of oxygen."

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-06-22

I don't get why everyone's so mad at her for saying nerds should dress nice when they serve food. So what if nerds have to dress nice in the South? Big deal!

Maggot Brain - 2013-06-22

Paula Dean loves big, fat, black cock.

StanleyPain - 2013-06-22

This whole thing seems like more that sort of dumb semi-benevolent racism from people who don't really understand race issues rather than a woman who actively hates black people or something. Not saying it excuses it, but it's pretty stomach turning to see the media so gleefully throw her to the wolves when there's way more casual racism every day on TV and in the news and basically the people who could be really, really, really easily called out on it never are because journalists on the whole these days are gutless fucking turds who don't have the balls to call out, say, Sean Hannity and Joe Scarborough for endorsing a fucking far-right fascist political party in Britain a few days ago because they advocate beating up pretty much anyone with brown skin, but go full-bore on a dumb-ass like Deen (who isn't even a news figure or public policy maker) because she makes a really easy target. I know this is business as usual and there's nothing special about it, but it doesn't mean I still can't be mad about it.

kingarthur - 2013-06-22

I agree totally. Her real crime is her food, but no one in this country wants to talk about addiction issues in relation to food and the huge companies that behave like the tobacco industry regarding it. Deen's an easy target for being a dumbass southerner.

Bort - 2013-06-22

Well, the issue at the heart of it is racial and sexual discrimination at the restaurant she owns with her brother. People are focusing on her deposition because it says something about how she derps along with the casual racism that she no doubt grew up with, and has never bothered to examine. There's some crazy shit in there.

But I think the first strike against her is that she suffers from, and tried to conceal, the diseases that come from the sort of cooking she showcases. That put a target on Deen as somebody we "should" go after.

As for Hannity and Scarborough, they are indeed far worse, but they also appeal to a demographic for being terrible people, so that's how they survive. Also, never forget Lori Klausutis, the intern who died in Scarborough's office under mysterious circumstances back when Scarborough was a Republican Congressman. While there is no evidence that Scarborough had anything to do with Klausutis's death, there was clearly a cover-up. And, it's odd that the media barely even noticed Klausutis's death, while they went full-bore after Rep. Gary Condit (D-CA) over Chandra Levy, even though there was no reason to think her disappearance had anything whatsoever to do with Condit.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2013-06-22

Yeah, I dunno. I think you're making the argument that Deen's supposed good intentions and obvious ignorance make what she said less outrageous, but I'm not really prepared to make those sorts of distinctions. Quite honestly, I'm not sure how someone reaches her age with those sorts of thoughts in her head. Everyone probably walks around with a few misconceptions, myself included, but there should probably be a line. Equating black people in service professions with slaves and looking back fondly on plantation life is probably a good one.

Bort - 2013-06-22

Well, I did say there was some crazy shit in there -- the only thing I'm minimizing is her outright malice. Depending on where you live and the people around you, you may find that ignorance is a very comfortable place to inhabit, until there's a lawsuit against the restaurant and suddenly you're in the public eye for being such an ignoramus.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-22

Is it wrong that every time I've looked at the front page today and saw this right next to "Fire With Fire" I get pissed off?

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-06-22

Its not the use of the N word that surprises or bothers me about her, its the "Southern Plantation Wedding" crap.

kingarthur - 2013-06-23

Pro Tip from a Southerner: that plantation shit gets taken seriously in the deep south. You have fraternities that dress up in their Confederate regalia and have grand balls and people will, in all seriousness and without any acknowledgement of their own stupidity and evil, say things like "Slaves were part of the family! They weren't treated badly at all because they cost so much money!"

I'd never have believed it until I heard it in person.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-06-23

I'm in the South too. I've heard that before (in Alabama, not surprisingly) as well as a young physician using the phrase "porch monkey." We have a lot of work to do.
