Flavored butlers?

I believe he's talking about what most steakhouses call 'compound butters'. Let a stick of butter sit at room temp until it's soft, then mix it with things like minced herbs, or carmelized onions and mushrooms, roll it in wax paper, and put it back in the fridge. It'll firm right back up to it;s normal consistency, and has all kinds of flavor. Fancier a la catre steakhouses will charge anywhere from -10 for a slice of that stuff on your steak.

They're honestly super easy to make and don't really need their own product line, but then again, so are clarified butter and hardboiled eggs, and you see that shit on store shelves too.

Her making a line of flavored butter is so predictable/a joke gone too far/meta...I dunno, it hurts my brain trying to categorize it.


I guess the real question should be is what toppings will she put on a stick of that butter before serving.

I agree totally. Her real crime is her food, but no one in this country wants to talk about addiction issues in relation to food and the huge companies that behave like the tobacco industry regarding it. Deen's an easy target for being a dumbass southerner.

Well, the issue at the heart of it is racial and sexual discrimination at the restaurant she owns with her brother. People are focusing on her deposition because it says something about how she derps along with the casual racism that she no doubt grew up with, and has never bothered to examine. There's some crazy shit in there.

But I think the first strike against her is that she suffers from, and tried to conceal, the diseases that come from the sort of cooking she showcases. That put a target on Deen as somebody we "should" go after.

As for Hannity and Scarborough, they are indeed far worse, but they also appeal to a demographic for being terrible people, so that's how they survive. Also, never forget Lori Klausutis, the intern who died in Scarborough's office under mysterious circumstances back when Scarborough was a Republican Congressman. While there is no evidence that Scarborough had anything to do with Klausutis's death, there was clearly a cover-up. And, it's odd that the media barely even noticed Klausutis's death, while they went full-bore after Rep. Gary Condit (D-CA) over Chandra Levy, even though there was no reason to think her disappearance had anything whatsoever to do with Condit.

Yeah, I dunno. I think you're making the argument that Deen's supposed good intentions and obvious ignorance make what she said less outrageous, but I'm not really prepared to make those sorts of distinctions. Quite honestly, I'm not sure how someone reaches her age with those sorts of thoughts in her head. Everyone probably walks around with a few misconceptions, myself included, but there should probably be a line. Equating black people in service professions with slaves and looking back fondly on plantation life is probably a good one.

Well, I did say there was some crazy shit in there -- the only thing I'm minimizing is her outright malice. Depending on where you live and the people around you, you may find that ignorance is a very comfortable place to inhabit, until there's a lawsuit against the restaurant and suddenly you're in the public eye for being such an ignoramus.

Pro Tip from a Southerner: that plantation shit gets taken seriously in the deep south. You have fraternities that dress up in their Confederate regalia and have grand balls and people will, in all seriousness and without any acknowledgement of their own stupidity and evil, say things like "Slaves were part of the family! They weren't treated badly at all because they cost so much money!"

I'm in the South too. I've heard that before (in Alabama, not surprisingly) as well as a young physician using the phrase "porch monkey." We have a lot of work to do.
