I remember when Deadpool was just Spiderman who killed people. Those were the days.

Deadpool works better in print. I haven't read his comics in a while, so I'm not as sick of him as some are, but he did have an interesting purpose in being nuts: His biggest superpower was being the only character who realized there was something wrong with the universe (like reality being a comic book). He could spout lines like Star Trek's "Q" and get away with it, but I think the editors mistook people liking that to mean that readers just wanted more crazy 4th-wall-breaking jokes.

Were I in charge, I'd actually think a story dealing with his actual insanity and it becoming at least partly debilitating would be an interesting take.

But nah, we're in for pies to the face and kicks to the crotch, pretty much.

Yeah, I'm not criticizing Deadpool or even meta or juvenile humor itself. But when you do a pie to the face, and then mention how cliche and unoriginal a pie to the face is, you haven't made it not cliche and unoriginal.

It's several steps below 'what's the deal with airline food' in creativity. It's not even a drawing of a dick on a school desk, because that at least mines humor from contrast. This is a drawing of a dick in a book labelled 'Big Book of Dicks'.

We are expecting crude and meta references from Deadpool, so you can't just make a crude or meta reference and think that works as a joke. There has to be something additional to it, or it's just fill-in-the-blanks laziness.

Basically, Deadpool went from being a ripoff of Deathstroke the Terminator to being a ripoff of Ambush Bug.

The good Deadpool writers get that Deadpool's jokes are mostly a cover for the fact that he's an intermittently lucid, horribly scarred, medical experiment victim who pretty much no-one tolerates unless they're forced to.

SPK- have you read Deadpool Max? It's David Lapham (eeh) with art by Kyle Baker (yay!), and while I haven't had the chance to finish it, it starts getting into some of those ideas.

One reason I couldn't get into X-men comics, every book I tried had that damn Cajun in it GAMBEET SAY LET THE GOOD TIMES ROULEZ MON CHERI, and he's just a terrible character. If Deadpool is or was originally a typical product of Liefield's worst tendencies, then Gambit is the worst artistic tendencies of Jim Lee put together with some of the worst tendencies of Chris Claremont.
