Well good -- the Doctor shouldn't be dating 20-year-old earth girls anyway. Half your age plus seven, Doctor!

Xenocide - 2013-08-08

That formula should probably be adjusted for people who live over a thousand years.

Bort - 2013-11-08

I'm not so sure it should. Like the Blinovitch Limitation Effect, it simply is.

RocketBlender - 2013-08-08

I've never watched Dr Who, because every single person I've ever met that told me I NEED to watch Dr Who has been such an obnoxious, rambling, obsessed dork I couldn't stand to talk to them longer than it took to politely duck out of the conversation.

Yes, I know I'm the nerd that posts Final Fantasy pop music cut scenes and controversial game reviews on Poe, but god damnit, even I have my nerd tolerance levels, and 'Whovians' just rocket straight past them.

In all honesty, this girl is a perfect example of the fanbase that keeps me from giving something a chance, which I will continue to do. Fuckity Bye.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-08

You need to watch Dr Who.

StanleyPain - 2013-08-08

The original series is fun and actually gave a shit (most of the time) about telling sci-fi stories as opposed to teen romance nonsense and it had a unique charm to it since the show, even at it's most popular, never really got much of a budget.
So, I would recommend checking it out.

RocketBlender - 2013-08-08

Okay, neither if those helped. At what point did it degrade to teen romance bullshit?

Xenocide - 2013-08-08

I will never understand people who refuse to watch something based on its fanbase. When did we reach the point where we decided it's impossible to enjoy something without also interacting with everyone else who enjoys it?

It's like refusing to eat a nice cheeseburger after receiving the news that Dick Cheney also enjoys cheeseburgers. Just eat your sandwich already. Your heart's more equipped to handle it than his is anyway.

As for teen romance, it dabbled in it for one season, but never really committed. I think the writers knew it was a bad idea, since a few seasons later the Doctor got a sidekick who was openly disgusted by the idea of dating him. Good times.

SolRo - 2013-08-08

The show is romance maybe 10% of the time, and 50% of the time it is nothing but sci-fi action/suspense

The seasons with Matt Smith have been exceptionally good, in terms of writing.

Everything has annoying fans, grow up and deal with it or ignore all forms of entertainment.

jaunch - 2013-08-08

Yeah, I can't guarantee you'll like it, but it's worth checking out on Netflix. Sure, it's cheesy at times (season 1 is hard to watch, it's so cheesy), but I think it's got some fantastic writing and characters.

asian hick - 2013-08-08

I'd recommend "Blink" and "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances". Both are creepy and show the series at its best. If neither does anything for you, you may be better off skipping it.

"The Eleventh Hour" which you can find on Youtube is the first Matt Smith episode and gives you an idea of what the new Doctor Who has become, for better or worse.

memedumpster - 2013-08-08

Fuck that, don't be a shallow piss-bucket, RocketBlendser, and fuck all the Nuvians at the same time. Go back to the FIRST DOCTOR and watch the Unearthly Child. It's time travel Twilight Zone and it kicks ass.

RocketBlender - 2013-08-08

Okay, I have to admit, Time Travel Twilight Zone does sound pretty cool.

Serious questions:

Are we talking Captain Kirk new girl every episode style romance here?

And what's the other 40% SolRo?

Listening to people describe this as good that don't include summaries of how hot they think each doctor is or how 'epic' something was does make me want to give it a chance.

That said, what's the story behind the recent fandom? Was it canceled for a while and just came back, or did it just recently gain popularity in the last year or so?

memedumpster - 2013-08-08

The First Doctor episodes have a unique tone unceremoniously jettisoned after the First Doctor. It has nothing to do with romance.

StanleyPain - 2013-08-08

@Rocket Blender If you want a more direct response: Watch "The Key To Time." The Key To Time was a season-long story arc done in the 70s when Tom Baker was the Doctor and I generally recommend it to Dr. Who newbies because it's a very solid collection of stories, but it also begins with a relatively clean-slate continuity-wise. There are no companions or other story elements coming into it, so you can start with the first story, Ribos Operation, and just watch the whole season all the way through.

If you enjoy that whole season, you'd probably like most of classic-era Doctor Who. Here's how it starts:

Answering Rocketblender's questions in order:

1)No, the Doctor is usually pretty asexual, actually. It's rare for him to get involved with anyone. He kinda-sorta had a will-they-or-wont-they thing going with his first sidekick in the new series, but it didn't amount to much in the end. The Doctor doesn't date.

There is one character who is a notable exception to this rule, but it's handled extremely well and their relationship doesn't take over the show (because of plot reasons she only shows up occasionally.)

2) I'm not Solro, but I'd say the other 40% is weird historical cameos, intentional but amusing absurdity, and self-parody. In various ratios.

Also, the show is usually good fun ad occasionally brilliant, but every now and then it gets really goddamn stupid. So be prepared for that.

3) Yes, it was cancelled in the late 80's, I think, after running continuously for something like 20 years. Then the franchise pretty much decomposed for a while, occasionally crapping out bad tie-in novels and an absolutely horrible TV movie produced for the Fox network.

Then in 2005, they rebooted the series (technically it's a continuation, but it sure feels like a reboot) and its popularity took off. The new series has had 7 seasons so far, along with yearly Christmas specials and other tomfoolery. Fuckity Bye will begin playing the Doctor as of season 8.

Also Blink is overrated.

BHWW - 2013-08-09

the real scum are the hard core Blake's 7 fans

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-08-09

Peter Capaldi is the first guy playing the Doctor I find really attractive. This girl has no taste at all.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2013-08-08

I still stand by my first choice for the twelfth Doctor: Idris Elba. I like the old episodes with Jon Pertwee, but the new episodes have no charm and shoddily written. I would hesitate to recommend the series.

And yes, I hate Doctor Who fans. Matt Smith is not a good looking person; he is charming, but I don't understand the fangirling. Never have.

EnochEmery - 2013-08-08

Idris Elba would have been a great choice but only if he used his Stringer Bell voice.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-09

But is the world really ready for a black Doctor?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-08-09

I keep hoping for Chiwitel Ejiofor or Mos Def but I'm probably dreaming.

Martin Freeman would be another good choice.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-08

It should have been Karl Pilkington. >:(

Bort - 2013-08-08

THE DA-LEKS' LA-TEST STRA-TA-GEM CAN-NOT FAIL
IT U-SES THE DOC-TOR'S GREA-TEST WEAK-NESSES A-GAINST HIM:
HIS COM-PA-SSION AND HIS DE-SIRE TO GET IN-VOLVED

BHWW - 2013-08-08

I'd watch New Who more if the Doctor told someone to he was going to put a jaunty little bonnet on their "purview" and ram it up their shitter with a lubricated horse cock.

SolRo - 2013-08-08

Camonk = waagh ?

Hooker - 2013-08-09

Waugh has a sense of humour.

mon666ster - 2013-08-08

Doctor Who is terrible. This video is not.

misterbuns - 2013-08-08

video is lol, sub is middleschool.

idiots according to camonk:

matt groening
joss whedon
guillermo del toro

misterbuns - 2013-08-08

also

neil gaiman
matt parker
trey stone

SolRo - 2013-08-08

parker and stone are not idiots?

RocketBlender - 2013-08-08

Hang on a second, how can anyone not like Whedon?

oddeye - 2014-05-08

I hope you are being sarcastic RocketBlender.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-08-08

I'm 1 starring this because the submitter is just trying to get a rise.

This is the same backlash when girls thought John Hurt was going to be the new Doctor. The new series does have a pretty obnoxious fanbase. Girls on tumblr like this who think hes hot or feel nerdy watching it, socially awkward men who think being loud and obnoxious means they are quirky and people who are rabidly opposed to the show due to it's popularity. Then there are people like me; mild mannered manly men who work with their hands who enjoy the show and don't try to portray any of the characters and have vibrant social lives and some other bullshit

memedumpster - 2013-08-08

I can't give Camonk's powerless alcoholic rage less than five stars, though I secretly wish he had more self-esteem.

Change - 2013-08-08

New users get awfully upset over trivial things.

poopy - 2013-08-10

fuck the n00bz bro

Change - 2013-08-14

Maybe it's not just the new users.

chumbucket - 2013-08-08

I agree Dr Who is total crap on crisps.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-09

I stopped watching after Tennant. I only watched those because it was something nice to do to spend time with my mother. She's a bit of an Anglophile.

Bort - 2013-08-09

Can you introduce her to "QI", or "Peep Show"?

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-09

Oh yeah, tried both. She really likes QI but hated Peep Show (too filthy!). Good suggestions though. Also, she likes David Mitchell a lot but not Robert Webb... again because of the filthiness. Haha, old people.

Bort - 2013-08-09

Okay, look for a drama called "Broadchurch". It stars Doctor #10, Rory Williams, the custodian from "Harry Potter", and Sophie from "Peep Show" (a.k.a. Prisoner Zero from "Eleventh Hour").

Hailey2006 - 2013-08-09

This is kinda like the Bronies after they learned about Princess Twilight and Equestria Girls

Riskbreaker - 2013-08-09

If these people are idiots because they care about a tv show, what do you call the people that care about the first group enough to upload a video?

poopy - 2013-08-10

This is a five star submission.

oddeye - 2014-05-08

Ok, fuckity bye.

fluffy - 2015-09-21

"Who the fuck is that" as if any Doctor Who actor has ever been known for anything at all before they became the Doctor, and oh also Capaldi actually had a rather illustrious career leading up to this including many starring roles on very well-regarded BBC shows, not to mention having been a guest star on Doctor Who several times prior.
