A lot of surveillance videos that appear on YouTube are usually made using this method, because the surveillance systems are closed-circuit or completely digital. There's no way to get a good copy unless you had an external recorder, or if the system uses one of those newfangled DVRs that can copy video footage to a DVD or SD card etc. Those usually require a security password to make copies (at least the ones in my workplace do).
