I was expecting a somber, orderly line. You've let me down, Germany.

Nominal - 2013-12-04

You weren't expecting a blitz?

This year, "Black Friday" was introduced for the first time in the UK. They didn't do this before. The force behind it was ASDA. Who is ASDA owned by, you may ask? Walmart of course. Walmart likes these videos, they like us watching them. They want to see scenes like this happening and being filmed in every country possible.

Gmork - 2013-12-04

5 for succinctly described evil

Senator_Unger - 2013-12-04

You can't have Black Friday without Thanksgiving! Who is giving them Thanksgiving!?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2013-12-04

It always mystifies me why people want a console so much. Its just a mid range pc in a fancy box with a horribly restrictive OS and firmware that you cant change.

RockBolt - 2013-12-04

Consoles are fine, but why anyone desperately needs a PS4 or Xbone right now is beyond me. There are no games. All the halfway decent games are also out on PS3 and everything else, the few exclusives out now are lame and have nothing particularly next gen about them. You can't play your old games on them. What are they doing with these things?!

Previous generations, there was a huge huge difference. I camped out for a PS2- and timesplitters and SSX were so mind blowing that when I tried playing my PSX games afterwards they were to chunky and slow for my brain to take. Now days, I'd have just as much want to play a recently released PS3 game as a PS4 game, only I can't do that on a PS4.

This time around, it'll take them a long time to use this new hardware to accomplish much other than graphics that are slightly crisper and you need to look at static screenshots to actually appreciate, so why the rush to pay launch prices for likely broken Rev A hardware I cannot figure it out.

This might be the perfect time for me to finally buy a 360.

Gmork - 2013-12-04

Nominal is doing it right

Gmork - 2013-12-04

Oh and Nominal - if you do, and that isn't a joke, they're now giving away free games twice a month on xbox live. Gears of war 1 is the current game, but I don't think i'd waste my hard drive space on it. For someone who's never played any of these games, though, this would be an opportune time to rack up a free collection.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-12-04

I prefer console gaming because:

- I am cheap
- I am lazy

In theory, PC gaming can be equal or even cheaper than console gaming in the long run, but if you want to take advantage of what makes PC gaming superior in the first place, it's going to be substantially more expensive and it's going to require some hardware literacy on the part of the user. Years ago, I did prefer PC gaming, but now? My time is so sparse that I'd rather be able to just pop in a game and start playing with system requirements being a non-existent concern.

I totally agree that buying a PS4 or Xbox One right now is completely and utterly pointless, however, and I say this as someone who got a PS4 on launch day; my significant other bought it, even though I told him that we shouldn't get one yet since there's really no games to speak of that aren't on PS3/360 already anyway.

It does have the best controller ever though.

hammsangwich - 2013-12-04

Steam/Humble Bundle is where I get all of my games for pennies on the dollar. I have a piece of shit video card in my PC (Radeon HD 6670) and I can play most games. Paying .99 is idiotic to begin with. I just got Battlefield 3 through the humble bundle (along with 5-6 other AAA quality titles) for or something ridiculous like that. I will never buy another console again. My Xbox 360 is just a Netflix/Hulu machine and as soon as my Live subscription wears out I'll get another Roku.

sosage - 2013-12-04

Rockbolt is wrong about one thing, the PS2 was not worth purchasing until a year and a half after launch. Its launch was so disappointing it pretty much invented the "12 month wait" standard for all video game consoles. It has been the golden rule ever since.

Otherwise, yes. There aren't a lot of compelling reasons to purchasing a XBone or PS4 right now, unless you are one of the people who have to work on shit that will make the XBone and PS4 a worthy purchase next Xmas.

Why buy consoles? Cheap. Accessible. Living room friendly. Local multiplayer friendly. No one goes to a party and says, "let's crowd around my PC in the bedroom and watch me play a game with the only keyboard/mouse available" vs. "I have four controllers and a console in the living room, let's all play this game for 20 minutes while we're drunk".

Of all the things our culture exports, we had to contribute our Black Friday trample tradition. The rest of the world, sincerely, I am so very sorry.

Nominal - 2023-09-29

10 years later there's even less of a reason to own consoles.

Putting a PC to your living room TV is easier than ever before.

Local couch multiplayer hasn't been a thing on consoles for nearly a decade. Ever since all the other companies decided to copy Microsoft's charging for online access. The incentive is to kill local multiplayer and force everyone to pay for a separate online account.

Fuck consoles. You can get a halfway decent gaming PC for maybe one to two hundred dollars more, and save that much in discounted games in just the first few months.

We're doomed. I'm going to find a cabin in the woods and take my chances with demonic forces.

exy - 2013-12-04

Well, that was sad.

Prickly Pete - 2013-12-04

There was a hot chick in there. How do I know she's hot? Who gives a shit, she has a Playstation 4.

memedumpster - 2013-12-04

By what I saw, there were three or four chicks. The one wearing blue is speedy and decisive.

Prickly Pete - 2013-12-04

That's the one. But if "speedy and decisive woman" sounds like an oxymoron to you, you might notice that a dude in white hands it off to her before she takes off...

memedumpster - 2013-12-04

Imagine if these things had black boxes in them, so when someone returned one for being dead out of the box they could see it went through a demolition derby which voided the warranty.
