So, does it hold up? I sorta remember it from childhood, being all kinds of freaks out by the Skeksis, and I'd rather hold on to the great memories than realize what a dumb kid I was.

You're not the only one; this is one of the few movies out there that still gives me nightmares from when I was a kid. Dark Crystal, Wizards and Gandahar (Lightyears) are movies that my parents rented for us when we were kids, because they're cartoons, right?

I'm going to have to get all Papa Murphy's up in this and get baked at home before I watch it, but five stars in advance so it stays on the front page :)

It's still a really neat movie. It's fascinating enough just to look at (though the elf-kid heroes are kinda stiff), and the underlying ideas add a lot to the usual world-saving framework. Love that soundtrack, too.

One of my favorite themes in this is that the Skeksis are valuable. You don't want them to die because it takes one of the good ones away too. The idea that they're not evil, they're lost, constantly gazing at the Crystal for answers they don't understand.

I was totally into this, even geeking on the added scenes, but the audio track goes out of sync after the bug monsters tear up the potato people village. Very sad indeed.

This is so much better without Jen's internal monologue and with the Skeksis speaking their own language.

As a kid, I had wondered why the chamberlain became suddenly stupid when speaking to Jen and Kira. Now it's clear he's speaking to them in their own language which he only has basic knowledge of.

The theatrical version seemed to spoon-feed exposition to the audience. I wonder how much of that was executive meddling and how much was in response to test audience reactions.
