The photo that you can see in the preview image was initially misidentified as "Comet ISON", but, according to experts, it may be fuel venting from a rocket launch.

(Just from looking, I could also easily believe that it might be an ordinary airplane contrail.)

The photo was taken December 7th in Australia, I don't believe Comet ISON was nearly that close to produce that kind of sky show, and, in any event, a comet sky show that spectacular would have been visible from much of the planet, not just this one little vantage point in Australia.

My own comet viewing experiences (Halley's in 1986 and Hail-Bopp in 1997) were both pretty underwhelming. I mean, they probably looked fantastic if you had a telescope, but they really just looked like little fuzzy dots in the sky without a telescope. That picture is not what a comet looks like to the naked eye from Earth.

I saw Hale-Bopp by accident. I remember looking up and thinking "what is up with that fuzzy star?" After looking at it for a minute I could kind of make out the tail. I still thought it was neat, but nothing to kill yourself over.

I'm also curious as to what that large white spot at the right of the photo might be. I don't think it's the moon... it could be a plane on a slight time lapse. I suppose it could be Venus depending on the zoom (there are no helpful foreground objects for me to be able to get some idea as to how wide the shot is).

And before anyone else says it, "That thing at the right of the photo? It's Nibiru, duh!"

There are a great many beliefs that warrant getting a sharp strike to the groin for taking seriously. Nibiru is one of them.

If anyone's interested in an ISON tracker:

http://theskylive.com/ison-tracker

The current magnitude from Earth is 4.98 (and fading, which means the number will go up), about the same as the star 39 Draconis: http://www.astrostudio.org/xhip.php?hip=90156
