Anti-fanboys are becoming worse than fanboys. Never thought I'd see that happen.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-12

Anti-fanboy? Hmmm, I'm not so sure about that. He dislikes the Wii U, but then, who doesn't?

Corporate meddling has ruined things for a long, long time, but console gaming is one place where it's really come to the fore. At least on machines that give you a non-proprietary OS, a keyboard and a mouse, you can wait for someone to circumvent whatever DRM or other stupidity is foisted on those with controllers attached to bricks.

He's also correct about most games across the board having little new to offer other than shiny graphics. I'd love some of that processing power to go to having, say, a ton more dynamic NPCs in an RPG all running at once over whether or not the gun I'm holding is high-def with bump mapping and more polygons than a Pixar movie.

Nominal - 2014-01-12

Being critical of landmark anti-consumer trends is a bad thing now?

5 starring my own submission to combat the sucking of corporate cock.

Gmork - 2014-01-12

SPK that is a poignant analysis of what's wrong with games. They only think to up the graphics with the same scope of game - seems like indie developers are the only ones trying to take on the task of making original products these days.

Try the Stanley Parable yet? Maybe a video of that up here so we can add another to the "Games that don't suck" tag.

Nominal - 2014-01-12

I dunno, ever since Braid, most indie games have been in the same "me too rut". Everything is either "retro pixelated junk", "watercolor vomit", "b&w shadow world", or some non-game ART statement on narrative or whatever.

It's gotten to the point where reviewers stain their jeans on overrated junk like Gone Home with the same fervor of bought and paid for AAA reviews.

Nominal - 2014-01-12

Hotline Miami was probably the only recent indie game to have a fun game under it all.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-12

Teleglitch.

Faster Than Light.

^Two reasons Nominal doesn't know what they're talking about.

Gmork - 2014-01-12

Reviewers suck, I just try demos and look at user comments.

Every time a game comes with an editor, it's always used to surpass the original scope of the game. More games need powerful WYSIWYG editors. Trials evolution had amazing replay value. The default maps were nice, but like Trackmania, the game really shines when some nerd spends way too much time making the best level ever. I love playing the best levels ever. I love making the best levels ever.

I made that one!

Gmork - 2014-01-12

(yes those british narrators are annoying, and if you want to annoy me my gamertag on 360 is Morgaine Le Fey)

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-01-12

One-starring this because Nominal actually said "sucking corporate cock" and is not a 14 year-old boy.

Nominal - 2014-01-12

I think it's very reasonable to think that only 14 year old boys hate all the anti-consumer restrictions of the latest consoles, given that only early adopting 40 year old manchildren with too much disposable income could possibly want one.

I totally forgot about FTL. That's 2 good indie games in 16 months!

That guy - 2014-01-13

Anti-idiots are becoming EVEN WORSE than idiots. I can't believe it!! Maybe it's about time the anti-idiots got some grief, too!! There are two sides to this!!

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-13

Don't forget about Papers. Please.

American Standard - 2014-01-14

Starbound. Don't Starve. Prison Architect. Kerbal Space Program.

I haven't played a AAA game since Skyrim.

Also, five stars for highlighting ridiculously anti-consumer corporate meddling.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-12

Took more than ten seconds to state the fucking obvious.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-12

In his more recent review of "Knack," he does bring up something I do wonder about: What games will our young'uns be nostalgic about, since the majority of offerings are either retreads (Mario, Zelda, etc.), generic Japanese novel-disguised-as-RPG, and... Angry Birds, I guess?

Kid Fenris - 2014-01-13

They'll get nostalgic about the current games from longer series. We already have kids who first played Mario and Zelda on the Nintendo 64, who started with the tenth Final Fantasy, who never knew about Grand Theft Auto before Vice City.

Or maybe they won't be so attached to their childhood games. Good for them. Nostalgia is dumb.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-13

Why is remembering things you once enjoyed dumb?

Kid Fenris - 2014-01-13

Nostalgia is seldom a measure of quality and often discourages people from re-evaluating things in a critical light.

Gmork - 2014-01-12

tl;dc (didn't click)

The answer is don't buy either.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-12

And yet you 5-starred it. Sycophant.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-12

Oh yeah: Cool Trials track, but the one before it was cooler.

Gmork - 2014-01-13

Obvious troll is obvious, we both know mine is better

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-13

Your track obviously took a lot of time and effort, but as far as sheer frustrating fun goes, I'm still sticking with the one before it.

memedumpster - 2014-01-13

Gamers get the consoles they deserve.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-13

Your analogy is flawed on many levels.

Sincerely,

Some idiot on the internet.

themilkshark - 2014-01-13

We've been through enough console generations to tell that this one is a bust, there's really no reason at all to get any of these unless you're dying to play the new Mario Bros. game.

Riskbreaker - 2014-01-13

Every single "professional" reviewer is part of the problem, part of why console gaming has gone to the shitter. The industry gets away with all sorts of bullshit stunts and nobody calls them on that. Not just that but there are no real criticism of games, the entire media is choke full of terrible writers. Yahtzee has been not very different. Sure, he has pointed out every now and then problems with some games, but since he became an internet celebrity he has become more busy building his internet persona rather than doing actual reviews. He's doing as much harm as all those sites that give good reviews to games that pay ads.

Hopefully we finally get the full crash in this gen. Console gaming won't dissapear, but it seriously needs to reboot. Then again, the average gaming consumer is so brainless this shit might never end.

Kid Fenris - 2014-01-13

Boy, I can't wait for the game industry to crash! I'm sure it'll wipe out only the tasteless, profitable blockbuster games and leave behind the smaller, interesting games that already struggle to find an audience!

Riskbreaker - 2014-01-13

Indie games suck too, they need to go away as well.

Kid Fenris - 2014-01-14

Well, what sort of games DO you like? I enjoy mid-range titles like Phoenix Wright and dopey RPGs, and if the industry crashes those games will vanish entirely or just never leave Japan.

chairsforcheap - 2014-01-14

i bought a wii u

hehehehe
