Brother John has clearly OD'd.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-03-12

More like Edewmacate

EvilHomer - 2014-03-12

Judging by the angle at which he's lying, that can't possibly be what you think she's grabbing. Get your mind out of the gutter, people.

dong

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

Haven't seen this one yet, but when we were all posting Johny Johny videos last week I noticed that the Edewcate stuff was consistently some of the most submittable, so a preemptive 5.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

Also the preview image.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

Just to be pedantic, the chords and melody do actually match it's just that the voice leading is bad and the singing is a little out of tune (probably becasue of incompetence but maybe because Indian music uses just intonation so I could see a less skilled singer from that tradition having trouble with the equal temperament of the midi instruments she's singing along with). Also if you're listening on laptop speakers you're probably only hearing the upper notes of the chords anyhow, this isn't exactly produced in a way that would translate well to any speakers at all.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-12

I would argue that the note she sings on 'ding' just doesn't work, no matter how you hear it. You're right, though, this one isn't as bad as the others in that regard.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

It is a little weird in context because the note she's singing makes it an add9 chord on the tonic (had to brush up on my theory to make sure of that, I pretty much don't think about this stuff at all anymore but maybe I should start again), but I think a better singer singing a better arrangement of a better song could have made it work.

But yeah, it sounded wrong the first time I heard it then not as bad the second time, then bad again when I listened to it after I read your commend then not bad when I listened to it AGAIN to make sure I'd transposed it right when I checked it on the trusty electric organ. So my final opinion is that it was a questionable choice at best.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-12

Yes, she's singing an added 9th (or 2nd, depending on how you want to define it). You're right, it could be made to work if the accompaniment were arranged better. It's a standard jazz chord. But I don't think anybody was thinking about it that hard.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-12

Oops, meant as a response to OZ.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

Yeah, I called it an add9 because she's an octave up.

The second time she bends the note up a little, too, and that threw me off.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

My first reaction though was that the real problem is the backing track just hanging on the I for that whole part, I think if the organ-ish part was I-V-I instead of I-I-I, probably with the first two chords in first or second inversion, the add9 wouldn't sound so bad. I tend to think of chord progressions in terms of the melodic lines the notes in the chords create rather than in terms of functional harmony so I don't even register some changes as changes anymore, which is a good thing sometimes but a bad thing other times.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-12

:)

gravelstudios - 2014-03-12

I was just struck by the absurdity of this conversation.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

I was struck by it a few posts ago, that's the main reason I kept it going.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-12

Anyhow, Yngwie said "if it sounds good it's right" and he's a guy who fights with dragons so he probably knows.

gravelstudios - 2014-03-13

I believe Duke Ellington said "If it sounds good, it is good".

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-13

I'm pretty sure you're right, but I was looking at 90s shred guitar instruction videos last week to see if there was anything worth submitting, so I know for a fact that Yngwie said it too, and only one of these people has slain a dragon.

bopeton - 2014-03-12

Mario 3 flashbacks.

The Mothership - 2014-10-20

That poor moon. Fight back, moon!
