So, as I understand it, the filmmakers got permission to do this from Jack Chick by playing it as straight as possible and convincing them they were fundie baptists or something, but they're actually not and just trolling them or something. I dunno...seems a bit a lot of effort into making the joke, really.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-03-19

Especially since Chick and the people who take his tracts seriously won't even realize they were trolled. They'll honestly think this is a serious movie about the evils of tabletop role-playing games.

Where's the fun in that?

EvilHomer - 2014-03-19

I pray to Talos they play it straight, and so help me, if they try and make this an obvious parody, I will fire a Greater Missile Storm at their asses. I love Chick Tracts, and the only way they work is if they come at you without a scrap of irony or self-awareness.

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-03-19

Gotta love it whenever Poe's Law makes the world a better place

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-19

This has to be played as straight as possible.

The whole point of proper trolling is that the trolled don't know they've been trolled.

So has anypony ever been handed a Chick Tract in person? If so, how did you / do you respond?

I was given one on the street once, by a young Puerto Rican preacher from one of those low-income urban church. I actually got a little fanboyish, truth be told, might have squeeled a little, and I tried striking up a conversation with him about Chick Tracts. I don't think he actually knew much about them, though. He just ordered them in bulk because he'd seen a positive review in some Baptist mailorder catalogue or something. Total bummer! I did manage to convince him to give me a good five or six tracts, though, so that was cool.

There were only two other times that I've come into any sort of contact with Chick Tracts IRL. I'm pretty sure my unit's chaplain was into Chick Tracts, but he wasn't allowed to hand them out, so that was a bit of a disappointment. Stupid Army regulations. The other time was my best friend's neighbours, a pair of major fundies. I never actually met them myself, but I guess they heard said friend's White Zombie album blaring through the walls one day, so they gave him a box full of Chick Tracts as some sort of fundie intervention. Poor kid read them all and got scared shitless of going to hell, so I told him I'd take his White Zombie albums off his hands, you know, to help keep him on the straight and narrow with Jesus. I was a good friend.

And that's how I got my copy of La Sexorcisto.

I always find them in bathrooms.

Gmork - 2014-03-19

"Anypony" just, stop. Christ, have some self respect.

CuteLucca - 2014-03-19

In college I found a ton of them stuffed inside particular library books-- anything to do with the history of the catholic church, demons, devils, satanism, nazis, democrats... I found three or four different ones that way (though it appeared that they tract-bombed the library with only one title at a time, so there was no point to searching the whole library every time)

I spent good money on Ebay years and years ago to get the original version of 'Dark Dungeons' which has an asterisked footnote referring to 'occult books' that says: "Including C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, both of which can be found in occult bookstores" There was almost immediate legal action taken by the Tolkien estate to have that sentence removed from all subsequent printings.

EvilHomer - 2014-03-19

Sorry, Gmork, that one just slipped out. I'm glad you're a good friend and can point out when these mistakes happen.

CuteLucca - any pics or chance of a scan? I don't think I've seen that one! Tolkien I guess I can understand, since he was a Catholic, but CS Lewis too... man, ain't NOPONY going to heaven on Jack's watch!

EvilHomer - 2014-03-19

Shit. NoBODY, sorry.

CuteLucca - 2014-03-19

Sure thing, here's the relevant page: http://imgur.com/Gv8oIH5

The rest of the book is pretty much identical to the version they've been printing ever since. If you like Chick tracts may I also suggest 'Hot Chicks' http://www.316now.com/ which are live-action adaptations of Chick tracts. There was a DVD released like... seven years ago which I have, but the promised 'Hot Chicks 2' was never made and I honestly have no idea if they're still active.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-19

Here's a Youtube channel that has the first 5 Hot Chicks movies, a video about how to kill and prepare a chicken, and a video of a cat.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-19

They remind me of Forbidden Zone.

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-19

Well the first one anyway.

January von Rodeo - 2014-03-22

Many years ago I cashiered at a grocery store in North Carolina and an old guy handed me one as he was checking out. I just smiled and thanked him and when I looked at it later it was all about the evils of Catholicism. I would have expected something more basic about sin or salvation if you believed in the stuff and were handing it out to strangers, but there you go.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-03-19

Minus so many stars we regress back to 5 for not including the following lines:

--"No, not Black Leaf! No, NO! I'm going to fucking die!"
--"I used the [...] bondage spell on my father."

That guy - 2014-03-19

Dear Jack Chick,
Truffault was right.
Sincerely,
That guy

And Gygax laughed all the way to the bank. Controversy does a wonderful thing for sales.
