He's probably wearing a wolf skin. It looks familiar; I bet it's a videogame reference, but since he doesn't look like any of the ships from "Omega Race", I'm at a loss. (Wolf guy videogame reference has an anti-Komarian bias.)

Yeah, the joke made sense (and was a pretty good one) in context, but in a random tweet it did come off as general dumb racism.

That wasn't even his twitter account, it was the Colbert Show's account that some intern manages and just tweets about the episodes and segments

As far as I know, it was through his twitter account managed by Comedy Central, so no he did not tweet it himself. But it'd be like if Adult Swim was doing a bump for the Boondocks and they used one of Uncle Ruckus' quotes, in plaintext with their typical black background and white font. Really, it's someone at Comedy Central who dropped the ball thinking it was funny as a stand-alone joke.

"Ching Chong" is more of a bullying term rather than a flat-out pejorative term like "nigger" or "slant" in my opinion; it goes back over 100 years but usually it's brushed off. For example, Shaq said it in reference to Yao Ming "Ching Chong Wang Ya Ah So", and Ming responded to the controversy with "Chinese is a hard language to learn." Shaq apologized too and the world moved on.

The show Extras had a similar bit in series 2, where Andy gets his own show and the gang puts on airs for a few visiting Asian members of a corporation, feeding them sushi and doing a Mikado singing "Ching Chong Chinaman Covered in Shit."

The problem with a bully word vs. a pejorative term is that, well you can't use the argument "they say it to each other all the time." If I run into my friend who's overweight and say "what up fatso" that's almost worse than "what up my Taro" (it's a Polynesian slur, look it up.) Not that I'd say either one out of context, but I might when talking about a racist sports owner, or making a lengthy comment on poeTV.

Colbert is not at fault, but I worry that the end result will be something like "it's still OK."

I feel a bit bad for that girl because she's currently being railroaded for this and I think she's just a dumb young person. I mean when I saw it out of context I thought "Whaaaaat" and it's not like Colbert hasn't made shitty jokes at the expense of minorities before. 10/10 would get outraged again.
