Human life will always be cheaper (more expendable) than robots. I've seen several "news stories" about robots/machines that were supposed to replace fast food workers by now, and yet my Taco Bell diarrhea fuel is still assembled by mortal hands.

I've never seen the movie, but I wonder what it was like for people who saw it for the first time, before its big revealing spoiler became synonymous with the title. Somebody had to be surprised.
