Silly gaijin, she's just preparing for the next tsunami.

Hooker - 2014-08-25

Are women even considered people with hopes and desires and capable of making surprising, unexpected decisions of their own?

Hooker - 2014-08-25

In Japanese culture, I meant to ask. That was a Freudian slip, since obviously they aren't anywhere, but Japan seems to take it way further.

SolRo - 2014-08-25

Japanese women? yes.

Japanese idols? no.

There's a metamorphosis stage after a Japanese woman signs an idol contract, during which she transforms into a being that has no existence outside of the industry. They're kept in lockers between appearances.

EvilHomer - 2014-08-25

This decision was surprising and unexpected, and who are you to say they didn't want this? Check your privilege, gaijin.

Sudan no1 - 2014-08-25

It's come to the point where I can't remember the last time I've seen "check your privilege" used seriously. It's too bad the concept gets mocked so often, because it's more relevant now than ever (see: open carrying whites vs. black teenagers who get shot for brandishing a cell phone).

And to answer Hooker's question, I would say that Japanese gender roles too rigid are stifling for both men and women, but women seem to be treated better there than other parts of Asia.

Sudan no1 - 2014-08-25

that's partially because an American feminist wrote gender equality into the Japanese constitution, but w/e.

boner - 2014-08-25

You think that's women you're looking at? Holograms.

Hooker - 2014-08-25

"Check your privilege" suffered from some really terrible branding. That thing was dead on arrival.

EvilHomer - 2014-08-25

In all honesty, I've seen so many people do this these last few days that I'm finding it hard to see why this particular video would be problematic. I'm assuming it's because they're famous girls and one of them is dressed, actually quite modestly, in a bikini top? "Check your privilege" may well be too loaded to be taken seriously, so... "please be mindful of double standards", perhaps?

Sudan no1 - 2014-08-25

Yeah, it's kind of an overreaction seeing how mild this is. It's a LOT less degrading than some Japanese TV.

the url was mangled, Sudan, but thanks for telling me about rocketnews24, man that takes me back.

There's a thing called Pinkerton Syndrome (I thought I was being all smart mc. smartypants but it's already been coined) that denotes the tendency for Eastern Women to go after Western dudes (or in Cio-Cio San's case, wait around and die for a dude who just wanted to fuck when she could've been moving on with her life..) The Western Canon does have a tendency to depict women in this way. Thing is, and correct me if I'm wrong, women, to me anyway, have always appeared stronger in Eastern literature, as badass ninjas, mecha pilots and scouts of sailors, among other things. I know there's plenty of counterpoints to this, but I always saw them depicted as stronger and more independent.

oddeye - 2014-08-26

You did not have to add "in Japan", women are second class everywhere on earth and it's disgusting.

Women should be strong and exist outside of being simple sex objects. Take the sexy hot Rita Repulsa; She commanded whole armies and monsters capable of destroying entire countries. That's what everyone should aim for, that level of freedom, women included. Plus exercising power makes you ravenous for it, Rita's panties must have been DRIPPING in juice.

The things I would do.....

Hooker - 2014-08-25

I've always found "shut the fuck up" to be far more useful.

Hooker - 2014-08-25

Meant to be a reply.

sasazuka - 2014-08-25

I'll admit it, I was hoping it would be all five of them, but the one that got repeatedly drenched is cute enough.

urbanelf - 2014-08-25

AYSU BAHKETO

Sputum - 2014-08-25

It really creeps me out the way they move around and constantly talk in a baby voice. It reminds me of how dogs have been bred to basically remain puppies their entire lives, or how we clip the wings of domesticated birds.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-08-26

This is one of the few times I've actually been able to spot ice in the water. Some of these people are cheating.
