Is this fake? Audiophiles have been training their entire lives to answer this question, without even knowing it.

jreid - 2014-09-09

Vocals are real, guitar is fake.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-09-09

This claims to be the mix as heard in the room.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HDMp8j7i1E

Yeah, both could easily be real. Vocals for sure, you don't need this special mix to tell how awful she sounds. With four other guitars on the stage she's just posing with hers.

If someone wants to really cause trouble, this should be done with Sid Viscious.

exy - 2014-09-09

Sounds like her.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-09-09

Seems legit.

Old_Zircon - 2014-09-09

Sounds better this way.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-09-09

Actually she's better than I thought she would be, which says a lot.

kingarthur - 2014-09-09

Best case scenario, this being the first song of the set: she was handed an out of tune guitar by the tech and just powered through regardless.

I don't think the singing prowess is anything to fault her for because 1. frankly it's passable for a live gig without technical fixes and 2. it's rock music, not La Boheme.

All that said and done, anyone can have an off night.

kingarthur - 2014-09-09

The source also posted a full mix of the same performance (though I can no longer find it on his channel) that pretty well verifies the singing is really her. No way for me to tell on the guitar part, however.

oddeye - 2014-09-09

Maybe all those other shred videos were real too... dun dun dun!!

EvilHomer - 2014-09-09

Courtney Love is nothing but an endless string of off nights.

spikestoyiu - 2014-09-09

If that is indeed the guitar, I think we're well beyond an off night here.

Billy the Poet - 2014-09-09

The guitar part's hard to buy. Even if she has no talent at all, you'd pick up enough technique to play a few power chords in 20+ years of performing.

urbanelf - 2014-09-09

"Courtney Love is nothing but an endless string of off nights."

Don't fret, EvilHomer. She strikes a chord with someone out there.

infinite zest - 2014-09-09

Courtney was actually my next door neighbor for about a year in a foster home. She was a lot older so I didn't go to know her but she was the cool kid that all the older kids would talk about. I like strong female vocalists and in a way I hear Mia Zapata channeled in her songs sometimes, not to mention Greg Sage, whose Wipers cover is done better in my opinion by Love.

exy - 2014-09-09

Unless maybe you knew your guitar'd be dialed down to 0, and you enjoy getting so fucked-up that actually trying to fret notes cleanly seems like a big hassle, so even though you know the chords, which helps make it look a lot like you're really playing, and hey man, you DID play on the album some so fuck those critics trying to stop you from having a good time anyway, so now you can concentrate on looking really cool and saucy when you strum, and you can look confident because you'll never fuck it up anymore, your band's got your back, and so fuck it, let the audio guy patch in and listen if he wants, but no one else will hear you play so why even bother trying, anyone got a spoon?

infinite zest - 2014-09-09

I really can't put myself in her heels. I'm not a huge Hole fan but I grew up on it like everyone else. One thing that pissed me off was, and it was random, was her being booed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame awards. Kim Gordon and Joan Jett took over Kobain's part. It was pretty weird to watch. I think Thurston Moore's an asshole now and won't listen to Sonic Youth anymore but Courtney didn't kill Kurt anymore than Casey Hopkins killed Darby Crash. Don't know who that is? Don't worry. As far as I know she wasn't in the spotlight until the suicide attempt and quickly faded away. Love was doing her own thing, and for a minute there, at least according to the Rocket, a local rag, bigger than Nirvana. That's gotta be hard to live with. Like if some money went missing from a store, I'd feel guilty because people might think it was be and I couldn't prove I didn't do it. Older friends who saw them fucking around at the Satyricon knew what the relationship was all about: it's punk love: fuck in a bathroom and make sure the toilet's not covered in vasaline in case you feel like doing some lines. The shit she got really isn't fair. She didn't destroy Kurt, he destroyed himself.

That guy - 2014-09-09

well, since kingarthur submitted this and then turned around and defender her, here's your 1-star.

Please share with present and future dumbfucks who think she's "not that bad" just cause they heard it in high school a lot or whatever other shitheel reasons they have for giving this asshole a free pass.

This is why we can't have nice things, even when those things are punk rock or whatever.

boner - 2014-09-09

Songsmith it.

urbanelf - 2014-09-09

The way she moves her left arm is so bizarre to me that I'm willing to believe that the guitar is real.

spikestoyiu - 2014-09-09

If it's not, I gotta hand it to whoever recorded the bogus track as they did a far better job than the "shreds" guy.

Rosebeekee - 2014-09-09

Read the comments before watching the video. The guitar is worse than I imagined, but her voice is better than what I was expecting.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-09-09

This is my favorite Hole song.

Not my favorite version, though.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-09-09

I'm skeptical over whether the guitar is real or not, but that's absolutely her signing, and I don't find it at all hard to believe. Courtney Love is basically a more physically resilient Amy Winehouse who's body hasn't succumbed to it's abuse yet.

Don't get me wrong though, while I won't try to deny that the woman is an utter trainwreck, she's more than capable of performing competently, and I do (usually) like this song. In fact, Celebrity Skin was one of my favorite albums all through high school, and one of the few albums that I still enjoy listening to today that I can say that about.

I guess I never really thought about that fact that my favorite song by them is entitled "Awful". Hmm.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-09-09

Counterpoint: Amy Winehouse could _sing_.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-09-10

The ability to sing is pretty overrated when it comes to determining the quality of music. Many of the widely considered best and most celebrated bands in history had vocalists who couldn't sing worth a damn. Meanwhile the mainstream pop scene bore out of American Idol and it's knockoffs is full of people with great voices who can sing wonderfully, and we all write their music off as shit and ridicule them.

Not that I'm even attempting to put Love or Hole on a pedestal, I never would, hell I'm not even attempting to claim their work is good. I was just saying she can perform (or at least, could perform) and I enjoy some of their work. But then, I enjoy work from lots of people that probably everyone here would call garbage, and I'm totally okay with that. I'm well aware that the vast majority of music I love is trash from an artistic standpoint. The difference between me and everyone else is that as long as it entertains me I just don't care, and neither should you, but I'm sure you do.

hammsangwich - 2014-09-09

I wouldn't be surprised if you got a similar result from Kurt Cobain.

VanillaJ - 2014-09-10

This is real. I personally know the guy that recorded it. And it's not Courtney Love's people that didn't pay him, it's a separate promo company that jilted him.
