I have never once pointed out the "Warlord" thing. In "Warlord", it's the Atlantean civilization that moved to the inner earth, and ended up destroying themselves with nuclear weapons, leaving a world of mutations, ancient technology, and eye candy for the men-folk:

I wasn't referring to the Warlord mention, just Kamandi.

I always just saw it as an allegory for a kid who escapes from reality after some traumatic event, like his parents divorcing or his sister getting killed or something (Marcelene lives for 900 years, and he meets his father in one of them, who quickly goes away again..) I have the same theory about Rick and Morty though, where Rick is the Hobbes to Morty's Calvin, so take my theory with a grain of salt. :)

Naw, Rick and Morty is a brilliant parody of Doctor Who. It works on many levels.

I always thought of it as a kid making up adventures in his head based on the people he knows.

Jake is, of course, his own faithful dog given a voice and super powers. Ice King is a scary crazy old man who lives down the street. Marceline is the babysitter he has a crush on because she plays guitar and teaches him about cool grownup stuff. Anyway, he's a lot better than the other babysitter, an air-headed bimbo who spends all the time talking gossip on the phone with her friends. Princess bubblegum is his mom, the smart, kindly authority figure.

Then the babysitter tells him about how the crazy old man used to be really nice and kind before he started going senile and that he can't help being the way he is. And the boy starts playing with a little girl his own age, letting her be Princess Bubblegum, but she finds it boring and makes up a new princess made of fire so Princess Bubblegum, who had been turned into a girl his own age, grows back up.

I've been asking the fates for a proper remake of Mazes and Monsters since I was a kid.

That would be tricky. On the one hand, A Clockwork Jacob's Ladder Orange would probably work with modern audiences, but it would lose the kind of touching sweetness of the original. I can't imagine "friendship" or "empathy" ever being a component of a nerd based movie ever again.

There was a decent early 1980s horror novel called "Hobgoblin" that could make for a decent movie. It was about a high school kid obsessed with a tabletop RPG called "Hobgoblin" which appeared to be a blend of D&D and Magic: The Gathering.

It wasn't like "Mazes & Monsters", exactly. The kid was mentally ill, but was apparently suffering the onset of schizophrenia. At the start of the novel, he experiences major emotional turmoil. First, the character he's kept going for years in the game is killed. Then, his father, whom he's very close with, dies unexpectedly. His mother is forced to take him out of private school, sell the family home and take a job as a curator at an old Scottish castle/museum that had been relocated and rebuilt in the US.

The kid has to go to the local public high school where he's treated as an outsider and bullied for his preppie dress & manner, although he does manage to befriend one young woman. As the kid's paranoia and delusions begin to manifest, strange and sinister things start happening in real life at the castle.

The young woman he befriends convinces him a great way to make more friends would be talking his mom into hosting a Hobgoblin-themed costume party at the castle on Halloween. (You can probably see where this is headed.)

It could easily be modernized and would make for a good movie, but Hollywood doesn't want to try anything that isn't just like everything they've already done before.

Pretty much all of the Ice King episodes starting with Holly Jolly Secrets, really. As well as the first Lich multi-parter that this seems to be an imagined followup to.
