nice self-star bro

John Holmes Motherfucker
Which do you think I am? Anita Sarkeesian or Stephen Colbert?

That guy
I'm glad you think the videos you put up are awesome.

Sexy Duck Cop
Why would he put up videos he thought sucked?

That guy
"Hey guys, this video is so good, I'd like to pat myself on the back for finding it and posting it here."

Anaxagoras
You're the worst, That_guy. Go away.

Ok just gimme a minute.

Oh god who cares

I'm glad you asked that question!

The Top 22 Most Ridiculous Things Said by 8channers About Anita Sarkeesianís Appearance on the Colbert Report

EvilHomer
I am not following any links, because I do not fucking care. I have not cared before, and I will not be made to care. The only thing you can make me care about IS NOT CARING. Which, ironically, is something I care very much about.

I have actually been working on a few things. I wasn't going to post them, because they aren't done, and like I said, who the fuck cares? But as long as we're on the subject, here is a rough sketch to let you know what is to come.

http://fav.me/d84ogoe

John Holmes Motherfucker
I'm a little too busy to figure out the mature content filter, but the concept seems epic. And I mean that in the literal Homeric sense

EvilHomer
Oh, sorry. I put the Mature Content filter on because I was being sarcastic. There is no Mature Content, it's just a pencil sketch of Aurini and Sarkeesian with some appropriate musical accompaniment. I will disable the filter.

The New Meat
You'll care once I show you my Anita Sarkeesian inspired My Little Pony OC.

EvilHomer
I am working on a picture of Aurini and Sarkeesian skipping through a fucking field of wildflowers.

EvilHomer
Actually, I would like to see an Anita Sarkeesian inspired OC! Is she an earth pony, or a unicorn?

kamlem
The pic of Anita Sarkeesian as a hook nosed jew in JHM's first post is a nice touch.

John Holmes Motherfucker
That was my second post.

Mother_Puncher
I don't care but I really like to bitch. Stop submitting gamergate bullshit, John

Scrimmjob
I'm fully on board with not giving a shit. This is like a fight between aids and herpes, one is less bad, but for fucks sakes I don't want either!

Also nice drawring homer.

Hooker
JHM cares. JHM cares more than anybody.

John Holmes Motherfucker
Maybe. But I get the feeling Homer cares just a little bit.

Architeuthis Tux
But ScrimmJob... Chances are, you already have herpes. Most adults do. Whether it's 'cold sores' or childhood chicken pox, herpes is basically included on the extended director's cut of the human genome.

Sexy Duck Cop
It amazes me how this first worldiest of first-world problems became a real issue. Yes, it's kind of inspiring that modern feminism consists of women complaining that getting thousands of dollars to play video games and state impossibly obvious facts such as "Sophia from Battle Arena Toshinden and Ivy from Soul Caliber are kind of sexist if you think about it really hard" is a sign of persecution. Nothing has served as better proof that women's problems today are really lame. Between this and the HORRIFIC SLANDER endured by that viral video of a woman being called beautiful a bunch of times, I don't know where they find their strength.

Old_Zircon
Chicken pox isn't herpes, by the way.

SteamPoweredKleenex
FYI, OZ:

"Varicella zoster virus or varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is one of eight herpesviruses known to infect humans and vertebrates. VZV only affects humans, and commonly causes chickenpox in children, teens and young adults and herpes zoster (shingles) in adults and rarely in children. VZV is known by many names, including chickenpox virus, varicella virus, zoster virus, and human herpesvirus type 3 (HHV-3)."

- Wikipedia, "Chicken Pox"

SolRo
hey sucking dick cop, did you know that just in America, one in 4 adult women have been sexually assaulted during their life?

They're still underpaid for equal work...when asked about how women should ask for a raise, the CEO of Microsoft said they shouldn't ask and that their bosses will reward them for hard work.

But because a handful of women have made comments about video games, and one actually dared make some short videos, your incredibly stupid ass thinks there are no problems anymore?

Like I said before, you're so fucking stupid, it hurts my brain.

tethercat
This is the single greatest conversation I've been privy to on the internet in all my years. Five stars.

Scrimmjob
Goddamn it Architeuthis, it's not herpes, IT'S JUST A LIP RASH OKAY!?

Love the petulant little "booo" at the end.
ShiftlessRastus
I pictured that "boo" coming from the opening of a small, flaccid, cheeto-stained penis.

John Holmes Motherfucker
The boo was whoever posted this on youtube, so I think it was just sarcasm.

Jet Bin Fever
In the extended version it turns out that he's just trying on his ghost costume for tomorrow.

So Gamergate's pretty much broken into mainstream consciousness and I still don't have a fuck of a clue what's going o?
EvilHomer
The only way to rise above this fagdance is to not get involved. You are making the right call, IZ! Help me spread the word, #whothefuckcares

Caminante Nocturno
Gamergate is what happens when victim complexes collide.

Meerkat
I also don't have a clue and I don't think I want to. There is a reason why I stopped playing online games and I suspect that reason is involved somehow.

infinite zest
I mean, rape and death threats are not cool, but anyone who's spent time on BBSs and IRC knows that's just par for the course. The gaming website I used to work for was a bit of an unintentional boys' club and then a girl wanted to join the writing team. We did everything including sharing the same hotel room when covering conferences (four guys in a room and one girl) and of course nothing happened. But the online posts and private messages we received directed to her were typical of horny boys who also get off on Amy Rose hentai (it was a Sega specific website.) She just shrugged it off. She knew that her reviews and reports would be more popular than ours' and now she has a job at G4.

That guy
basically you have to agree with everything the gamers say, or agree with everything Sarkesian says

you have 3 seconds to pick teams forever

John Holmes Motherfucker
>>>I mean, rape and death threats are not cool, but anyone who's spent time on BBSs and IRC knows that's just par for the course.

Yeah, and that's got to stop. Nevermind that it's a different story when you're a controversial public figure and it's coming from every direction at once, Never mind that someone like Zoe Quinn, whose game is about depression, seems to be a lot more wounded by the harassment than Anita. ( If someone is more sensitive to threats than someone else, is it her fault?)

It's bizarre that right at the very beginning of the internet, , typing in all-caps was determined to be bad form, but death threats are considered by some to to be okay, unless they're "credible". We can't have a generation growing up thinking that threats are legitimate discourse.

infinite zest
Yeah I agree, and for the record I didn't know that her game was about struggling with depression. If someone told me to go jump off a bridge, I'd probably reply with two well-thought-out words, or not respond at all. But if I was in a suicide forum or something, completely depressed, serious and reaching out to people, I'd take the advice differently. So I guess I'd be on Anita's side regardless of if you're a game designer or work at a fast food restaurant, or regardless of gender: sure, people idly threaten Pewdiepie, Cliffy B, Seanbaby and countless others in the male gaming world all the time, but as far as I know they don't care and ignore it.

And as far as what I can gather from Sarkeesian's arguments about objectification it's true: games have become more gritty and realistic, and things like strip clubs are featured just like they are in crime movies. And for every 100 Duke Nukems there's one or two Laura Crofts. But here's a funny thing: at least in my experience, more of my girlfriends go to strip clubs than my male friends, and erotic dancing is an art to them vs. the novelty "Full Monty/Magic Mike" silliness of soccer moms with appletinis staring at a cowboy's swinging dick to the Rednex Cotten Eye Joe. I know that's real life vs. virtual life, and I would like to see the "average" girl depicted in games, but when's the last time that the "average" guy was depicted in a game either? I'm being completely serious when I ask this because I don't really play games, but a guy with my body-type (tall and lanky) would be the nerdy bombs expert and the overweight guy would be the comic relief, and the muscular guy would be the protagonist. In general, I just didn't care. And until I have proof that without mods you can actually sexually assault a person of the opposite or same sex in a game that's not classified as "adult," I don't know if I'll care about this issue either.

But the threats need to stop and we do need to grow the fuck up.

John Holmes Motherfucker
Technically, the difference between threats on Pewdiepie and on Anita isn't the gender, it's that the threats are presumably more random. Anita's getting it from more than one direction, combined with a whole lot of other bullshit. GamerGate may claim they're not repsonsible for the threats, but there sure are a lot of Gaters out there talking about how she faked the threats, which definitely adds to the level of anger. It becomes a lot harder to evaluate threats, and with all that bad juju flying around, a threat doesn't really have to be credible to get into someone's head, simply as a reminder of the other psychos out there.

Now, when threats and harassment reach this kind of level, it seems to me that the target is usually female, but what does that matter? And can't we just all agree that threats are wrong, even when it's random shit posting at pewdiepie? I know there's always going to be some asshole, but can't we at least get it to the point, where people aren't going to seriously argue that it's not really a threat unless you really intend to kill or rape someone? Threatening a woman with rape is about as reprehensible as calling a black person a nigger, yet it's far more accepted and common. Can't we at least fix that?

Rosebeekee
Last night I had someone tell me that death and rape threats aren't a big deal if they come from non-credible people.

Also, gamers have the right to be angry because Anita is "demonizing" them.
John Holmes Motherfucker
I think I know that guy!

Adham Nu'man
A: "Anita Sarkeesian portrays all gamers as disgusting shit people, WE ARE OUTRAGED, WE ARE NOTHING LIKE THAT, WE ARE DECENT PEOPLE CONCERNED ABOUT ETHICS!"

B: "But what about the Death Threats?"

A: "What?!? You're going to take seriously anything a bunch of gamers say?!? LOL what a putz!"

Rosebeekee
Add some shit about how posting the death threats you've received is "playing the victim card" and it's a perfect reproduction of the conversation.

Bort
"Last night I had someone tell me that death and rape threats aren't a big deal if they come from non-credible people."

This is sort of true, in that they're not threatening the impossible, and any one of those fucktards could be the one who goes through with it.

If they were threatening something they weren't capable of -- say, stranding Anita at the summit of Olympus Mons -- it would be a different conversation. Still jerky, but different.

SteamPoweredKleenex
I also think it's a weird disconnect in some of their minds, because how common is it for someone to say, "I'm gonna kill that boy when he gets home" or "They are SO dead" in a casual context? If one is very literally minded to begin with, there's probably no difference between that and what most people would consider actual threats of violence.

countvelcro
Anita Sarkeesian plays Candy Crush Saga:"Oh God, this is fucking boring and dumb."
BHWW
Well, I guess it's fortunate that AS has managed to successfully make "Either you agree with Anita Sarkeesian et. al or you support death and rape threats" a real A/B meme in the minds of a shitload of people who should know better, including smart people I know who should know better.

Sarkeesian never played video games, doesn't like video games, and her true end game is that she wants to be a face and voice lots and lots and lots of people listen to, whether she really has anything of substance to say or not and she's succeeding.

Sarkeesian has a long record online of participation in the worst ends of marketing and self-promotion her fans pretend doesn't exist. Prior to starting her Feminist Frequency stuff, her whole still-discoverable background is akin to that of a late-night infomercial hawker. That's why she's so polished and well-spoken and etc. and her videos are so professional looking and etc. and why she got on Colbert and Suey Park didn't. She's been practicing a long time and working with more successful telemarketers and learning from them and etc. Suey Park got on TV with one minor leaguer once who got her all flummoxed with some rather pretty innocuous questions.

Sarkeesian's a smart marketer/propagandist and mostly hiding her real issue - the same issue as Jack Thompson and everybody else who hates video games: playing video games where you shoot things turns kids into murderers-
for the moment behind the misogyny nonsense.

People I'd expect to be much smarter, people who've seen this sort of thing before and some of whom play video games watch her videos where she lies about games they didn't play and go OH HOLY SHIT, EVERYONE ELSE WHO PLAYS VIDEO GAMES MUST BE A RAPIST OR AT THE VERY LEAST A BIG SUPPORTER OF "RAPE CULTURE". She's well on her way to being a "progressive" version of Nancy Grace.
SolRo
For something 'really about gun violence like Jack Thomson' she hasn't made a single call about banning games or anything Thomson was known for.

Or are you having some recurring nightmare that the evil, evil, very bad woman fools everyone with her sensible arguments and becomes some demi-god ultra czar of video games and then BAM, bans your favorite Call of Battlehalo game?

StanleyPain
Hahah you are seriously comparing a feminist deconstructing video games with Jack Thompson, are you fucking serious or is this a thing where you go to reddit or an MRA forum or something and pick a post and copy paste it??

Oh my god...

StanleyPain
Read this post in Bane's voice. It takes on new dimension.

BHWW
I forgot the other A/B choice, if someone disagrees with Anita Sarkeesian they must be some sort of ultra-misogynist PUA/MRA straight out of Patriarchytown.

Also, shockingly, plenty of people manages to disagree with AS without sending death or rape threats but let's just pretend that isn't so. A lot of people shouldn't feel like if we disagree with something, we're on the side of rape threats. That's beyond stupid.
Sarkeesian isn't a critic, she's not an activist, she's a marketer/propagandist. A con artist, an evangelist (redundant). And I guess some people here, including you, are her marks, lucky ducks. I bet that helps you feel really superior.

SolRo
"We're just disagreeing with her"

All the slander and trash talk is for zest?

SteamPoweredKleenex
Shockingly, many people actually believe voter ID laws are about trying to prevent voter fraud, not about being racist privileged pricks to minorities and the poor.

The trouble is, you can't divorce it from the fact that these initiatives were started by racist privileged pricks.

GG is now falling all over itself to say it's all about ethics in gaming journalism, whatever that means. What it doesn't appear to mean is targeting AAA game companies who pass out payola with their business cards. They demand favorable reviews for early access to games and/or ad buys. Is that a problem for GG? Oh, noooooo. They worry about non-existent sex for non-existent reviews, because that lets them photoshop "war" posters and become their own version of the Tea Party all over social media.

John Holmes Motherfucker
>>Sarkeesian isn't a critic, she's not an activist, she's a marketer/propagandist. A con artist, an evangelist (redundant). And I guess some people here, including you, are her marks, lucky ducks. I bet that helps you feel really superior.

Also, shockingly, some people manage to disagree with Anita Sarkeesian while actually talking about the videos and the issues, instead of indulging in personal attacks and insults.

I only watched a couple of her videos, and found that I disagreed with them at least as much as I agreed with them. As far as I'm concerned, Anita Sarkeesian is only important because of the way she's attacked. That's reason enough. I admire her, not for what she says, but because she refuses to be silenced. It's her right to make videos that has been challenged, not anybody's right to play games.

Adham Nu'man
Supporters of GamerGate, please understand these 3 key points.

#1 Seeking ethics in gaming "journalism" is a retarded cause.

#2 Sarkeesian did not become famous after duping anyone, she was made famous by the people who opposed her. First of all because caring so much about her was ridiculous in the first place, and generally because the negative responses to her were at the very least ridiculous, and at worst criminal. If people had let her be, nobody would care by now.

#3 People will never like gamergate or gamergaters, and will always support her and other women in her position, not necessarily because they believe her thesis on videogames. They might not even care. It's simply because rape threats and mass murder threats are an inherently more important topic than whether the latest review for Super Smash Bros was sponsored or not.

Bort
For whatever it's worth, my introduction to this whole mess was some videos that poked holes in Anita's arguments. Fair enough, I said to myself, she has something of a point, but her arguments are intellectually dishonest so the heck with her.

It was only when I saw the vile misogynist shit being flung back at her that I realized exactly why this isn't just Internet background noise. Whatever shortcomings there may be in Anita's arguments about misogyny in games, are overwhelmingly offset by the real-life misogyny on display. And that's the issue.

Between Anita and the catcall lady and Jessica Williams on "The Daily Show" and probably a couple other things that I think are building on one another, we're getting a clearer picture of what it's like to be a woman in America, and how much constant low-grade bullshit they have to endure if they want to coexist in the world with men. It's an education, and more, it imposes an obligation on us to do something about it, whatever we can. The point of awareness is the point of responsibility.

Old_Zircon
"we're getting a clearer picture of what it's like to be a woman in America"

It's pretty sad if this is true (and it probably is), because it's not like it's exactly been a big secret up until now. I mean yeah, as a man I don't witness a lot of it first hand because unless you're doing it or friends with people who do, it doesn't usually happen when you're around, but how are so many men unaware of it when having even one or two friends who are women should be enough for you to have at least some level of awareness of oh wait I just answered my own question.

Bort
It's the difference between abstract awareness and actually seeing it.

dairyqueenlatifah
The #Gamergate faggots have made Ms. Sarkeesian and Ms. Quinn more popular than they could have ever hoped to be.

Oh well, as much as I hate Anita, knowing how bad this is making those faggots squirm is the silver lining to this mushroom cloud for me.

I can't wait until all these people get bored and move onto something else to get offended/defensive over and then video games can just be video games again.
John Holmes Motherfucker
>>Well, I guess it's fortunate that AS has managed to successfully make "Either you agree with Anita Sarkeesian et. al or you support death and rape threats" a real A/B meme in the minds of a shitload of people who should know better, including smart people I know who should know better.

The brilliant part was how she tricked those dudes into making the death and rape threats.

Reading this, I find it hard to believe that you know a lot of smart people. Most of the people I know who are

>>Sarkeesian's a smart marketer/propagandist and mostly hiding her real issue - the same issue as Jack Thompson and everybody else who hates video games: playing video games where you shoot things turns kids into murderers- for the moment behind the misogyny nonsense.

Jack Thompson was a lawyer who actually tried to prove that video games were not protected by the first amendment. This is light years removed from anything Anita Sarkeesian has ever done, and if and when she does, I promise you, her fans will instantly turn on her. Most of the anti-gaters that I've come in contact with on Twitter are dedicated gamers and people who care about free expression.

GamerGate has more in common with Jack Thompson than Anita Sarkeesian ever will. GamerGate wants to shut down points of view they don't agree with. Jack Thompson wanted to shut down video games he didn't like. That's why they're all unambiguously the bad guys.

I also just want to add a special 'fuck you' to EvilHomer and any other asshole who loudly, pointedly, repeatedly and at length 'doesn't care' about this or any other 'controversial' issue in a concerted effort to undermine the clearly-winning-both-the-argument-and-the-culture-war side because these pieces of shit actually do care only they're just pernicious, passive-aggressive shitbabies.

Nobody should be under any obligation to care about this particular... thing. The internet echo machine has amplified it into this absurd positive feedback loop which both sides feed on.

John Holmes Motherfucker
Homer cares plenty. He was understandably irritated at my touchdown dance.

I believe that this is a defining moment in internet culture. I think that makes it important, but there are other important things to care about. Part of me is grateful to GamerGate for distracting me from the predictions that the GOP is about to take the Senate. Anyway, you may have your own problems.

poorwill
"Nobody should be under any obligation to care about this particular... thing. The internet echo machine has amplified it into this absurd positive feedback loop which both sides feed on."

I understand that this is a response to what I wrote, but what I don't understand is how this relates in any way to what I wrote.

Bort
"Nobody should be under any obligation to care about this particular... thing. The internet echo machine has amplified it into this absurd positive feedback loop which both sides feed on."

I disagree. More than anything, the Internet has helped expose the low-grade bullshit that women have to go through as part of their everyday lives. Granted, not every woman is Anita Sarkeesian posting videogame commentary that pisses people off, but I would bet more than a few women here have had to deal with way too much misogyny online. You can't know this and then decide "oh well, this doesn't affect me so who cares". I suppose technically you can, but that's no way to be.

Jet Bin Fever
Hey, good for her. It's a good show to be on. I would give a nut to be interviewed by Colbert.
Old_Zircon
Too bad she brought basically nothing to the dialogue with this platform she's been given.

In the context of "vlogger who explains basic concepts of feminist criticism in simple language using popular culture" I was all for Anita, but as "popular face of 4th wave Feminism" she's kind of embarrassing. I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of academic Feminists working today who could have actually done something valuable with this media attention.

John Holmes Motherfucker
You could certainly wish that Anita was funnier or more eloquent or something, BHWW thinks she's "polished" and "well-spoken", but I think she always seems awkard on camera, though here at least she seems to be having fun.

But she gets up there and does it, and that's the main thing. She's got the necessary guts, and that's what it takes. I made a video about this controversy, and I was surprised at how frightened I was to put myself out there. I almost didn't do it.

Meanwhile Suey Park is having a pout because SHE didn't get invited onto Colbert, because Sarkeesian is a white woman obviously. I'm sure the whole #CancelColbert business had nothing to do with it.

Oh god, Suey Park. When I'm in a bad mood I like to read this page and it cheers me up:

http://joslynstevens.com/2014/03/30/cancelcolbert-politics-off ended/

John Holmes Motherfucker
Suey Park really is the stereotypical SJW that GamerGaters imagine they're up against, never afraid to use the word "white" in every sentence. I tried to be sympathetic to her. If she'd gone after "Family Guy", she might have had a point, but when she started to complain about "mainstream Asians", all sympathy went out the window.

Bort
Suey Park is the vacuous chowderhead that never realized college is for applying one's brain; she chanced upon a course of study that rewarded pushing buzzwords around, and then found a niche on the Internet that is impressed with that.

The worst thing about Suey Park is that she discredits the movement for social justice, which needs respectable public figures if anyone is to take them seriously. Instead, not only did we get Suey Park, but a gaggle of other smarter figures taking her side. There's a columnist I sort of like named Brittney Cooper who also teaches at the University of Alabama; sometimes she's right on the money, sometimes not, but never less when she was defending Suey Park from her "frenemies" (read: white liberals who happened to recognize what a twit Suey Park is).

#gamergate has taught me three very important lessons:

1. People without any understanding or stake in a given subculture or the people trying to profit by it sure do like to have opinions about it.

2. Apparently, some people believe that shielding people from criticism is protecting them when it seems a lot more like infantilizing them.

3. Some people don't seem to realize that using the unethical behavior of a few to discredit the opinions of many is a bit like the old "knocking all the chess pieces off the board and then strutting around like you've won."
Binro the Heretic
1 - Unless you're a Brony, you can't have an opinion about Bronies

2 - So we shouldn't shield "gamers" from criticism.

3 - Okay, time to be serious. If the #gamergate movement really disagrees with the bad behavior of "the unethical few" amongst their ranks, they need to decry that behavior every time it happens and when members repeatedly and openly engage in that behavior, they need to be disowned from the group.

John Holmes Motherfucker
1. This isn't happening in a game. It's happening on the Internet. We're all inventing the communities of the future, and these things matter to all of us.

2. We need to understand what criticism really is. It's not "you said you weren't a gamer in 2010, so everything you say is a lie."

3. The debate isn't whether GamerGaters are good people or not. If it were, the actions of the few shouldn't discredit the many, but the debate is about the effect of GamerGate on our internet culture, and in that respect, the effects of the criminal element looms large.

poorwill
"gamergate" started with harrassment and misogyny. That is one of it's foundational values. The attempts from within to rehabilitate the image are as laughable as the efforts of the Klan, you uncomprehending dumbass.

SteamPoweredKleenex
1. That sounds a lot like GamerGate. Loads of them have this definition of "gamer" that is exclusive to AAA-level + games, mostly involving firearms. If you play anything else (including tabletop games/RPGs), you're not a gamer in their eyes, especially if you hold contrasting opinions.

2. What do you think an editorial is? Do you not realize it's separate from news? It's where someone gives their OPINION. If someone's experience is that a segment of people who play vidya games are raging assholes and calls them out on it, that's still an editorial opinion, and grown-ups can take it or leave it.

3. GamerGate has a really weird idea of what "ethics" and "corruption" are. "Ethics" as it's been applied to those they decry (often for relationships/actions that never took place or have any bearing) is never applied to the 800-lb gorilla of corporate incentives to get the reviews they do. See, that would be going after actual documentable payola, but that would require setting GG's sights on EA, BioWare, etc. which they don't seem willing to do. I guess it's because there's no sex involved?

The tabletop RPG industry and the movie industry went through a realization that it was excluding a wider customer base by routinely objectifying women. And before you cry that people are out to remove boobies from games, look at film: Boobies are still there, but it's slowly starting to not be ALL that's there. GG is wrecking the expansion video games into new spaces and into new ideas because anyone pointing out that a lot of product is murder-shooters and giant hooters causes calls of "CORRUPT" and "FIRE THE SJW!"

Xenocide
There is no fucking "gamer subculture" anymore. Video games are completely ubiquitous now. Practically everyone under 50 plays games in some capacity; calling people who play video games "gamers" is redundant as hell; you may as well call people who enjoy music "songers" or something.

What we're seeing here is a group of obsessive losers whose lives revolve around video games and who think that somehow you don't count as a player of video games, and have no right to an opinion about them, unless you also spend every waking moment playing Call of Duty or whatever the latest overhyped AAA sequel is.

That's not a "gamer subculture" that's a small obsessive fandom that happens to revolve around a certain type of game. Saying that others have "no stake" in games because their consumption patterns don't follow yours is fucking laughable.

The term "gamer" was only valuable when video games were obscure. Those days are long behind us: everyone is a gamer now. And that's what pisses Gamergaters off. They can't feel like special little snowflakes anymore now that everyone on Earth knows who Mario is.

Today I learned that a marketing demographic is a subculture.

Demanding TRUE OBJECTIVITY in game or film or music reviews is retarded. Demanding ETHICS in gaming journalism is kind of pathetic.

Movies get hyped in the press ALL THE TIME through sponsorship. Entire articles in magazines, websites and segments on E! channel about an upcoming movie are there because somebody paid for it.

Somehow, I still generally manage to distinguish between shit films being pandered by the studios and a decent movie.

It's 2014, even in fucking Costa Rica I can rent videogames from a machine in the Supermarket. Stop pre-ordering shit online because it was hyped in some fluff piece and wait for the game to come out, see what other people online are saying about it, watch a let's play video on youtube, rent it, whatever. What you don't do is start a crusade about it and expect people not to laugh at you.

If, on top of that, part of your club is posting misogynistic shit, making threats of rape, calling in to Universities to threaten mass murder, sit back and think: "is this cause really worth it?"

1. You all missed the word "understanding". That goes double for anyone who thinks I meant "gamer" culture is responsible for the one side of the argument. It's the chans. You would know this if you could see past your self-righteous outrage long enough to piece together some kind of coherent thought about what's happening.

2. People should absolutely be able to take criticism, that's basically what I said.

3. Gamergate is about a group of hateful little weasels with penises shouting the things they know will rile up a group of hateful little weasels with vaginas who are shouting the things they know will rile up a group of weasels with penises ad infinitum. Painting the argument as "one side is right and the other side is wrong" doesn't seem accurate EVEN IN LIGHT of the death threats. I'd put money on there being way more than enough threats of violence to go around on both sides, it's just that publicizing them all doesn't really work to the advantage of both equally.

4. Having said all that, the vitriol from one side is kind of expected because that's how I know those people to be. It doesn't make it right and is no way an excuse. The vitriol from the other side doesn't scare me, doesn't imasculate me, it doesn't make me insecure... it just doesn't seem quite as just as you seem to think it does. It just leaves me with this nagging creepy feeling that something I do, which is treat everybody generally equally +/- holding them accountable for what they say and do, is becoming culturally passe in favor of having to publicly subscribe to a certain specific viewpoint that at the end of the day, gives women a lot less credit than they deserve as complete individuals who are fully capable of hearing something they don't like.

Tl;DR: It's all dumber than hell and there is no upside.

Colbert mispronounced Tifa Lockhart's name! The audience should've rioted!

I ignored and skipped all this shit just like I skipped the current consoles. I'm not sure why any of this is news. This should be just another entry in encyclopedia dramatica.

I like games where you can be creative and destructive at the same time, like terraria or trials. I even have the guilty pleasure of playing Warframe, a free to play MMO with emphasis on action/acrobatics and third person shooter elements.

When I play multiplayer, it's usually with people I know. I have kind of lost faith in the current "community" of almost any online game. I can't believe I'm old enough now to complain about the younger generations and how they're ruining everything. I thought it would be at least after I was 30.

Theres such an epidemic of virgin shutins committing violence against women in real life, im glad an attractive woman is finally coming out to shame their reclusive hobbies further
That guy
To which attractive woman are you referring?

SteamPoweredKleenex
Because doxxing and death threats sound the same coming from a "virgin shutin" as they do from someone with an itchy trigger finger, so they have to be treated the same.

Don't forget it was one of these "virgin shutins" as you call them that SWATted an online rival of his and then wept like a baby when he was sentenced.

Adham Nu'man
Also, don't forget "virgin shutin" is THE main demographic of most school shootings.

SolRo
virgin shutin is one of the biggest recruiting targets for the NRA as well.

Get a gun, make them pay!

Sexy Duck Cop
As a woman, I am incredibly powerful. My spirit is made of iron and the very fabric of my being is unbreakable. Tremble before my indomitable spirit. Look on my works ye mighty and despair.

wait wait wait what the fuck is this some retard on the internet posted a retarded comment about me time to have fifteen meltdowns and act like this is worse than a jenga tower made of syrias

Of all the stupidity around this topic, I think this this comment is the most disappointing.

A non-gamer's perspective:
Thank you Gamer Gate. You are informative and entertaining. You are entertaining for the same reason that TFL, MRA's, Infowars, tea-partiers, and all other grass roots shit-shows are entertaining. You have spectacularly flawed logic and completely transparent motives. Your insecurities are fueling your bad ideas. You look silly to non-gamers, and embarrassing to sane gamers. Whatever the flaws of your opponents in the gaming world, you are helping their public image more than you will ever know by acting like petulant children. You are the shitty kid having a tantrum in the store because mom won't buy the toy. Non-gamers are either judging or laughing at you. To the non-gamer, this whole mess is like someone lifting an old mattress in the woods to show all the pale, shit-eating worms writhing beneath. This thread in particular has shown me which of the people on this site whose opinion I can either be dubious of or dismiss altogether. A lot of non-gamers watch the Colbert Report, and a lot of them are going to be looking under that mattress soon.

Again., I wish I'd linked to this sooner. Best article on GG I've seen.

To me, there aren't two sides to this. This is about freedom of expression. If someone was really trying to suppress games, I'd be on the opposing side. Instead someone is trying to suppress speech, and I oppose that for exactly the same reasons.

Check their manifesto. They want games to "develop freely and naturally", but to them that means not in an environment of free discussion and inquiry, but in an antiseptic environment, "protected from the rhetoric of totalitarian ideologues". Only fascists feel the need to be protected from rhetoric.

Isn't GG just Freep for gamers? Their MO seems about the same.

Colbert's soft tosses are, sadly, strikes for Anita. I wish she had something worthwhile to say, but she doesn't, only the tired canard of "objectification." The vitriol and harassment toward women seems to be making many feminist-ish people grip more tightly to the objectification criticism, but it's the phlogiston of feminist theory. It doesn't explain hostile or benevolent sexism, it doesn't explain aggression and violent threats.

(JHM, here's a bold claim: schadenfreude is immoral. You cede moral high ground. The "delicious manbaby tears" play doesn't actually help feminism.)
TheInternetisFullofGenitals
So what does it mean if I don't give a shit about Gamergate or Anita, Zoe, Brianna, et al?

Because all of it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
