also I should point out the director had a great shot of an anthill right before this scene that stands as an obvious metaphor.

I've heard stories that apparently the Library of Alexandria was more of a giant closet that people stuff scrolls into more than something that was actually curated and organized in any sensible way. I can't even being to gauge the authority or veracity of the idea, but I find it funny, so I want to share it anyway.

Some historians believe that the library wasn't destroyed in one big tragic conflagration. It was probably damaged during invasions and riots on three separate occasions, but it was rebuilt to some extent each time. Records suggest that the library just fell into disrepair and disrepute due to poor funding. There wasn't much left of it by the time they were burning scrolls to heat up the medieval hot tubs.

This looks good. I remember my theatre was getting a bunch of posters and stuff for the film, but I don't think it ever came, or if it did it was after I left and I sort of forgot about it. Seems like every period movie was going for X-TREME Roman/Greek/Spartan etc. around this time, and this looks like it avoids that dumbed down aesthetic for a really good story and great, real visuals.

oooh and Rachel Weisz is in it. Movie-boner and boner-boner in one movie? I'm definitely watching this! Thanks!

Callamon - 2014-11-02

Rachel Weisz in the roman baths.

infinite zest - 2014-11-02

Between this and The Fountain, she sure seems to like taking baths. Maybe it's in her contract?

Nominal - 2014-11-02

You belittle her Constant Gardener bath scene, sir.

infinite zest - 2014-11-02

Oh yeah!

infinite zest - 2014-11-03

Do I lose points on here if I say that I liked the Constant Gardener movie a lot more than the book, in sort of the same way that I liked Tom Clancy/Robert Ludlum movies and not the books? LeCarre's leaps and bounds ahead of those two but that book in particular just didn't do it for me.

Nominal - 2014-11-03

I like every Phillip K Dick movie better than the book, so I am in no position to judge.

This one sucked too!

The history of the early monastics is pretty monstrous. Originally, they were literally just roving bands of Christian thugs. The Benedictine Rule was a direct response to events like this, trying to bring some sort of order to these guys. In order to discourage the wrong sort of elements from basically just putting on a black/brown robe and running around smashing things in the name of Christ, Benedict declared the rule of celibacy and mandatory work duty to weed out the riff-raff.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-03

... and in so doing, punished all the best monks, and helped weed the genetic material of good, hard-working, intelligent people out of the gene pool.

Sure, I may have washed out of monk-college, but now I get to roam around fucking tavern wenches and populating entire baronies with my own pig-faced hellspawn!

hallelu - akbar!
