Worth watching all the way through.

Well if this teaches us anything, its not that we should ignore a compelling sob story...Its that we shouldn't raise 100k for a compelling sob story.

The anger is understandable, but you shouldn't have just given her a bunch of money when she so obviously has problems.

My sister has problems. We love her and know she's not bad at heart, she just has problems. That's why we don't just give her money when she needs something. We get her the something she needs.

Spending money on frivolous stuff can be an addiction for some people. It floods their brain with a brief rush of endorphins. Even though they know they will feel shitty later, their brain still wants that rush.

It's hard to argue with your own brain.

This is why, if you want to give anyone money "out of the goodness of your heart", you need to swallow your pride and be willing to commit to that principle; altruism for altruism's sake. If you've got any ulterior motives beyond pure altruism - if you're expecting the person to be grateful to you, or worse, expecting the person to just drop everything and start living their lives in exactly the way you envisioned for them - then you might as well save everyone a load of bullshit and keep that money for yourself.

(I rather suspect that this Tim fellow was taking things a step further: that his motivation was primarily to be *seen* doing charitable work, thereby earning himself admirers and subscribers. It would go a long way towards explaining his decision to make this video in just this manner (i.e. very angry and self-righteous): this seems to be the reaction of a man who feels, not grief for a recalcitrant friend who has made poor life choices, but rage over the fact that his reputation has been hurt, and now needs to distance himself from the source of that hurt as swiftly and bloodily as possibly.)

Yea, whole thing smacks of effort, man. Dude's trying too hard to be mean to someone.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-11-22

To be fair though, raising money for a cause is raising money for a cause. Period. As long as there is transparency in where the money is coming from and where it is going to there's no reason to go into the finer details of "BUT ARE YOU TRULY RAISING FUNDS BECAUSE YOU ARE AN ALTRUISTIC, SELFLESS PERSON, OR ARE YOU JUST DOING THIS TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF?".

Charity and fundraising is a real-world activity to help real people/causes, not some abstract exercise to evaluate the purity of the moral/ethical construct that a person decides to live their life by.
