I don't know anything about this show and I am not going to look it up. I'm just going to assume that the show is actually about who can make the biggest splash in a swimming pool. I wonder if you can swim in cocaine the way scrooge mcduck swims in money.

chairsforcheap - 2014-12-10

basically it is a show about diving and he did a really bad dive which is scarier than just doing a regular dive, and then the show moved on and i think got cancelled fast.

yogarfield - 2014-12-10

Going off the top of my head:

It was a European show that the Brits co-opted and infused with minor celebrities, and then America went and out-co-opted them with even more minor celebrities.

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

Man, you gotta be careful with this shit. I used to lifeguard at a pool with olympic-sized platforms, and some guy about the size (and diving skills) of Louie bellyflopped and split his stomach wide open. He survived, but after that we didn't allow regular people (or celebrities) on the high dives.

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

OK I looked it up. There's something about "Greg Louganis mentored the competitors" doesn't sound quite right for some reason..

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was on this show. Now I want to watch it. It makes sense given it was around Olympics time when Americans give a fuck about sports other than baseball football and basketball. Goddamnit.

yogarfield - 2014-12-11

Btw, my comment wasn't a joke. That shit really happened.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

I still hate Louie Anderson with a passion because of a joke he made on HBO in 1985 about the death of Rock Hudson.

Holy shit, he's fat!

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-12-10

I've always felt nothing but pity for Louie Anderson.

yogarfield - 2014-12-10

The face down joke? Yeah.

Also it is perfectly acceptable to hate Louie Anderson for the following things:

his face

giygusattack - 2014-12-10

Are you sure you're not thinking of Sam Kinison? I never saw Louie Anderson make gay jokes.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-12-10

I just remember that awful "Life With Louie" cartoon and a couple of Comedy Central stand-up bits.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

Yep, the face down joke. Not only was it hateful and horrible, it was super unfunny.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

Might as well share it. The joke was that at the funeral, Rock Hudson was displayed in the casket face down "so that his friends could pay their last respects".

This was the height of the AIDS crisis. There are few things that I consider truly unforgivable, but fuck you, Louie Anderson.

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

I put it in the hopper a couple of months ago and it didn't make it out, but I had the same problem with Chris Rock's opening monologue on SNL. He made jokes about how he's never going to the One World Trade Center building and and the Boston Marathon bombings, which crossed several lines for me.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

The face down joke is on youtube? Shit, it lives.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

Couldn't find it, thank God. I must have misunderstood.

Funny how shitty comedians are often lumped into the same, unfunny nebula.

Have a Louie Christmas you fuckers!

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

Barf. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, but isn't that pretty much the exact same story as A Christmas Story? I have a feeling that pretty much everyone who grew up in the midwest has a similar tale, but if this isn't plagiarism then it's just plain lazy.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-10

I don't get it. Was Rock Hudson friends with lots of necrophiliacs?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

That's not it, and to my mind, this wasn't anywhere close. Kinison's joke was in bad taste, but it was a legitimate joke about the consequences of human weakness. Anderson's joke was a pornographic burlesque of the grief of those who mourned Rock Hudson. Homosexual

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-10

(Shit, passing cat apparently hit "Enter")

Homosexuals are all about assfucking. Even mourning takes the form of assfucking.

I've sense heard something about Anderson being gay. Would that make a difference? Maybe, but only if he was out back then.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-10

Oh. Well that doesn't make much sense; after all, they're not *all* about assfucking! Homosexuals are also about kissing, and BJs, and footjobs, and spooning on the couch after a DVD episode of Sex & The City. Homosexuals are about a lot of things. One thing they aren't really about, though, is fucking dead people - that's a necrophiliac thing. That's the way the joke would make sense.

I guess perhaps he could be gay AND a necrophiliac, but, fuck, I dunno, maybe people's senses of humor were different back then?

As for me, I think I have a dangerously high tolerance for black humor: one of my most cherished childhood memories was watching GWAR buttfuck Jon-Benet Ramsey's corpse. It takes me a lot to get truly offended; like, maybe if someone cracked a joke about Cupcakes, but that's about it.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-10

Or were the rules different back then? Like, I know gays used to hang out with pedoforks way back in the day, before early Queer Rights pioneers realized that the only way to mainstream their agenda was to kick the pedos to the curb. Maybe gays and necros were part of the same extended family back in '85, sort of like how furs and otherkin and voreaphiles and cubbiecon enthusiasts all hang out together nowadays?

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

Hudson's relationship with Jim Nabors was pretty obvious, but in those days it was dangerous, unlike Tom Cruise et al in the tabloids these days. Since people turn to the bible, Sodomite became sort of an all-encompassing term for anyone who would put their dicks in anything except their wives.

yogarfield - 2014-12-10

Speaking of cupcakes...

Kids are a lot like the icing on a cupcake.

By that I mean you shouldn't go sticking your finger in them! Ho ho!

Be sure to tip your waitress!

baleen - 2014-12-10

Louie Anderson has crippling sciatica.
That's probably why he is diving like this and why he's getting so much support.

Even so, I've watched this clip about 10 times and it still makes me laugh.

Just seeing Louie Anderson makes me laugh, I don't know why.

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

Yikes. I had to look up what that meant, and it sounds horrible. I still haven't seen the clip, but Anderson made light of the dead when being gay was still something that people made laughed about, and Hudson was sort of the Elvis of that: nobody ever knew for sure that he was gay, and myths and conspiracy theories popped up. At the time it was probably like telling a joke about Elvis' ghost being seen at the White Castle or something.

infinite zest - 2014-12-10

Bad grammar aside, I won't stay mad at a comedian for 30 years even if he made a tasteless "joke."

yogarfield - 2014-12-11

baleen, I think I know why Louie makes you laugh:

his face

Cena_mark - 2014-12-11

Life with Louie was an awesome cartoon, also I'm sure since 1985 Louie has softened on the gays just like the vast majority of Americans.

Spit Spingola - 2014-12-11

Whoa, that's a fucking awful joke. Have forgiven people who have done worse, though.

Louie Anderson is also probably gay in real life (supposedly he came on a guy who then tried to extort him), which might explain the homophobia. Coupled with the fact that he's both really fat and strange looking, I sort of feel for the guy.

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-12-11

^Stars for my favorite kind of typo, one that not only still works but may actually be more precise.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-12-10

At first, I thought the guy in the Sandman shirt was there to keep him from running away.

boner - 2014-12-10

splash? more like tsunami am i right i'll be here all weekend.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-10

I'm going to set aside the obvious observations and note that two of the three judges (I think they're judges, maybe they're contestants, who can tell?) appear to be wearing PVC bathrobes.

chumbucket - 2014-12-10

Terrible tv idea

Fucking surreal.

Jesus, that is some male fucking gaze going on at :40. Truly, not a show unwilling to be exploitive.
