This was the only thing like this in a sea of Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters.

This is how I remember it airing on Nickelodeon. I remember it pretty well because we didn't have cable so I'd go over to my friend's house and watch Snick and order pizza. They cut this out? It's one of my favorite R&S scenes.

They eventually cut out most of the best stuff, I've heard.

The Mothership
This aired? in the early 90s? Wow.

Yep. On a "kids" show, on a "kids" network. I remember our parents wouldn't let us watch Beavis and Butthead (we had our ways of watching it anyway) but Ren and Stimpy slid right under their noses.

actually, in a lot of ways, tv has gotten more conservative, in at least the level of humor that they think kids can understand

I remember this! They cut it out? figures...
My dad let us watch Bevis and Butthead because he thought they were funny too.
If Miyazaki hadn't stipulated that his films remain uncut, I'm sure Disney would have removed the bath scene from Totoro.

I must have lucked out, because every episode I saw as a kid had all of the censored stuff in it. Kind of felt cheated when a friend of mine spent on a bootleg tape of Ren & Stimpy uncensored episodes and other than the George Liquor/dog show episode that I guess never aired in full, and some pncil tests, it was all identical to the episodes I'd taped off of TV.

In fact, I don't think I've ever seen the censored version of this episode. I only saw the censored version of Powdered Toast Man once, and that was years later.

Seems kinda weird that they'd censor it after it ended on Nick, "Kids" VHS or not, given that MTV started running it shortly after its cancellation. Cutting this scene for a younger audience than "Young Adult" makes sense, but what exactly did they leave in? What'd they cut out of the Powdered Toast Man episode? Did they even bother with "Don't Whiz on the Electric Fence?"

I guess DBZ did something similar, changing references to death to "other dimension," editing out the blood and brief nudity, and rendering the plot even harder to follow than the original, but that's something that's easier to do with a show most American viewers (especially the targeted kids audience) wouldn't know shit about, unless they went to Japan as a kid like I did and saw it there. I think most kids knew what Ren and Stimpy's gross humor was going for and who their target audience was, even if some of the innuendos went over our heads until the adult one came along and *ahem* shoved it down our throats.

I've never actually seen the censored version of Powdered Toast Man but supposedly they cut out President Powdered Toast Man burning the constitution to keep warm and the cartoon basically ends with a dick joke that they cut. Some of these cartoons have many different versions. I had Big Baby Scam on VHS as a kid and this whole scene is cut out, but on the "uncut" DVD just the part where he whistles (which is a reference to the whistling child murderer in "M") is cut.

aw man.. that was my favorite part. And I wouldn't even know what "M" was for another 10 years or so.
