Great episode (can't think of a bad Mr. Show), but by far the classic moment is the "Eating Fruit From A Shitty Tree" segment starting at 12:24.

Yeah this is actually one of my least favorite episodes, mostly because of the failed attempt at Monty Python humor with the Queen sketch that goes on far too long, but then comes the God-via-Don Henley memoir and of course the Monsters of Rock thing. I didn't even watch it, I just know all the episodes by heart.

I had to skip ahead to find it, but 26:45 or so is another one of my favorite Jay Johnston moments. He's a skydiver, goddamnit, leave him alone! He has skydiving to do.

Monster Parties

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

Yeah, the queen one is probably the low point of the whole series.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

I get that it's lampooning run of the mill British TV comedy but it's just dull.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

Dullness being the point doesn't help.

It reminds me of the dumb "gay son" sketch from a few seasons back where the guy with the mentally challenged goats comes in and interrupts it halfway through and everybody breaks character. That would've been perfect here (I think we've all been pranked in that way, or at least not knowing when it's your time to leave the party) but for whatever reason, someone thought this would be funny for as long as it goes.

If you watch the dvd with the commentary track, they really hate the sketch where a guy takes a shit in a fancy restaurant. Also, the one with the plane crash survivor who ate all the other passengers.

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-09

The "Fackin' Guys" one in the preload is a classic. I should rewatch these some day when I have time.

It's cool that they're all up on Youtube, but back in the 90s they were IMPOSSIBLE to get unless you had cable and recorded it. Then, they released the free VHS tapes to certain video stores because HBO wasn't going to release it, which, throughout most of the early 2000s were checked out and never returned, THEN, they released the DVDs.. finally. Now it's all just there on Youtube? Kids these days I tell ya what.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-09

I don't think either Bob or David have confirmed this, but the rumor goes that someone connected with the show leaked tapes to various video stores around California so they could rent out the show and make copies to circulate.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

Now if only I could find anything about the pre Mr. Show home movies they did that will never be released because of music licensing issues. The guitar player in my band around 2006 went to see them and they were selling DVD-R's of it, but his friend who bought one moved away before I had a chance to burn a copy, and that's the last I've heard of it. It's apparently pretty great, according to the one guy I know who's seen it.

Actually, I haven't looked for it in a few years, maybe it's finally out there in torrent land.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

Maybe he meant "The Best of Colin's Sleazy Friends," that looks right. I never knew they collaborated with Danzig.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

(dang, they didn't actually appear WITH Danzig. Oh well.)

I lost my DVDs years ago but I think they were an extra on one of the sets. Also I found some other stuff through dapcentral.org but I think it was just an early version of Hooray for America and a few other sketches.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

My understanding is that the one he got was never released because the soundtrack was full of A list classic rock like Led Zeppelin that they never expected to even consider licensing, and that it was "shot on a home video camera and full of weed jokes" according to my friend, who rated it very highly.

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-09

I've never found anything about it on line, though.

infinite zest - 2015-01-09

Hmm.. I'll keep my eyes peeled. It's really foggy memories but DAP isn't what it used to be anyway, apparently. If I turn out finding it in one of my envelopes I'll burn it. Periodically remind me of this so I don't forget :)

boner - 2015-01-09

Yeah this show was turning into one of those things I could remember but nobody else did. I bought the DVDs as soon as they came out.

infinite zest - 2015-01-09

My friend whose parents had basic cable would get one of those "one week of free HBO" things, and the episodes were super-sporadic if I recall. Like, it'd be at 10:30 or 4 in the morning. Because it got pushed around for Arless and shit? Fuck 90s HBO.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-09

Oh, and this happened to me a few months ago. :)

Grandma on the custard box is Bob, isn't it?

This is a pretty good episode, I'd forgotten almost all of it.

boner - 2015-01-09

Pretty sure she's Dr. Retarded's mother, and we also take a trip up her ass in another episode
