Hi-Tek drop that four to the floor
I get real paid what you think I do this for
My bodyguard help me get to the bar
Niell Blomkamp's making me a movie star

fedex - 2015-01-09

u get stars for that...Ninja would be proud

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-09

I fink you Chappie and I like you a lot.

Gmork - 2015-01-09

hey chappie boom boom hit me with the ching ching

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-09

This looks like a much better reboot of "Robocop" than the last one.

infinite zest - 2015-01-09

Ya this trailer makes it look more tolerable than the other one. I was really skeptical about District 9, like it was just a much longer Alive in Johannesburg but it turned out being great. Elysium, not so much. Blomkamp's got the apartheid metaphor pretty down pat, and so do Die Antwoord, whether you like their music or not. I'll see this.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

I was actually a bit disappointed with District 9. I went into it with very high high hopes, and walked away... well, not exactly dissatisfied, but underwhelmed. It was a competent movie, but it was distinctly unmemorable; a tepid, forgettable, but not unpleasant blur. Something about aliens are black people, humans are bad, oh here's a setup for the sequel, nevermind no sequel for you. That's pretty much it. Nothing really stood out, except the novelty of filming something in the ghettos of South Africa.

It was a decent movie, certainly better than that other anti-human scifi film, Avaturd, and I can certainly understand why people liked District 9. But _I_ was let down by D9, and while I'd be willing to watch this Chappie thing (because ROBOTS) I'm going to be very skeptical from now on.

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

I'll admit that the third act turns it into just another action movie, and I was skeptical off the bat because I heard that Peter Jackson's producing was hinting at the Halo movie getting greenlighted should District 9 prove successful commercially and critically, both of which it achieved. Maybe the world wants a Halo movie, but I sure as hell don't, or at least don't care. And all the action at the end does feel a lot like Halo, but I was under the misconception that it was a Halo prequel, even though I've never played the games. You'd have to find the old videos but I was ripping apart this movie while everyone else was telling me to shut up, months before it was released in theatres.

And as far as Die Antwoord goes, I was actually excited to hear about them, I think back in 2008 or something. I think I read a little article about them on Pitchfork, and for a minute they were an enigma that I enjoyed telling people about, like I was the only person in the world who knew about this new group. But, like Gorillaz before it, their rise to pop success was pretty damn calculated. But all things considered if I was riding in a car and the driver had the top 40 radio on, I'd rather hear Die Antwoord than One Direction.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

I don't know, I think a movie where One Direction goes and gets killed by a bunch of robots would be quite amusing really.

What's the Die Antwoord connection here, anyways? I'm assuming they are acting in this?

fedex - 2015-01-10

I'm not sure if you are trolling since Vi$$er is kind of hard to miss, but yeah they are. .

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

I know them by sound only; don't have the faintest idea what they look like. Is he the robot?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-10

District 9 was a great world-building movie and the main character's setup was well done.

It was when they had alien fuel turning humans INTO aliens along with why it took any of the aliens this long to re-launch the ship (or why humans hadn't completely taken the spacecraft apart to make their own) that things really fell apart and the metaphor for the film was largely lost.

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

Here's a good video.. for lack of a better analogy, they're kind of like a South African Chumbawumba.

http://youtu.be/AIXUgtNC4Kc

And it looks like they play themselves as Die Antwoord, at least according to imdb. That's actually pretty cool. The voice sounds like Visser, but can't confirm.

ashtar. - 2015-01-10

EH:
Try
http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=104305
or the die Antwoord tag.
How could you have missed all the die Antwoord videos on here? How would you rate Yo-landi's attractiveness?

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

Also Dev Patel is in it, who was my favorite character on the series Newsroom. Oh and some guy called Hugh Jackman. Don't know who that is but I'll see this. I WAS right about Guardians of the Galaxy after all, wasn't I? If this turns out to be horse shit then I will get a tattoo of Evilhomer's choice

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

Yeah, I've heard them before, just no clue what they look like. I assumed they were one of those faceless machine bands, like Daft Punk or Fall Out Boy, who used actors and/or CGI in their music videos.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

"If this turns out to be horse shit then I will get a tattoo of Evilhomer's choice"

Whooah whoooahh, really? Will you *really*?!

Muaaaahhahahahahahaha

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

Yep. I've got a tattoo gun and everything. I'll give to myself. Just so long as it's in a place I can cover it up and it's not a swastica or something otherwise offensive I'll do it. But I know you better than that.

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

Sorry, phone cut out some of that.. I would get your archieluxury picture tattooed on my thigh

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

Damn! Swastika on the forehead was my first idea!

I'd say you should get a cutie mark tattoo: it's basically just a thigh tattoo anyway. Did you really like my archieluxury pic enough to get it burned into your flesh?! I was actually a bit disappointed with how it came out; it would have stayed in my scraps drawer along with most of my stuff, but there was a seriously lack of archie fanart on DA.

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

That works too. I actually gave my friend a Rainbow Dash tattoo about a year ago, the cloud with the rainbow lightning.. I don't know why I'm describing it.. Basically we get drunk and give each other tattoos, but I still just have the two: My Wipers tattoo and an illustration I found in a Yukio Mishima book, can't even remember which one. I think I did a pretty good job. If I get her permission to take a picture of her chest I'll post it on my DA, but I need more tattoos, it's just the inspiration that holds me back sometimes.

fedex - 2015-01-10

Yo-landi on a scale of 1-10 for me: 7.5

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

She's a 9 out of 10 for me; loses a point the same way Joanna Newsome she's really hot but I don't really want to hear her voice any more than I have to. 10/10 is Neko Case, in case she's reading this thread about CHAPPiE on poeTV. What's funny is after all these years I always thought she was Ninja and the dude was Yolandi.

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

It could be telling that the movie's being released right after the Oscar race; I was surprised that D9 was nominated for Best Picture, but if nothing else it was a case of right place right time. Releasing your movie in March pretty much guarantees that nobody will remember it the following January, or whenever they announce the Oscars. I say that if the film gets a Metacritic score of 65 or less I'll get the tattoo and at least 2 of you guys are my facebook friends so you'll know if I'm being full of shit. :)

James Woods - 2015-01-11

The Die Antwood connection is that they have written lyrics about how Neil Blomkamp is going to make them famous because he's one of the only Luther famous South Africans outside of football.

Hi-Tek drop that four to the floor
I get real paid what you think I do this for
My bodyguard help me get to the bar
Niell Blomkamp's making me a movie star

infinite zest - 2015-01-11

Holy shit! I thought that was just Ashtar. dropping some science up at the top of this incredibly long thread. It's definitely not uncommon for rappers to drop names or brands or what have you, but it's weird for Die Antwoord for some reason.. like, the video for Fatty Boom Boom is pretty much "fuck Lady Gaga and all voyeuristic musical tourists, stay out of our shit or face the consequences," and among other things starting their own label after the fight with whatever label told them to conform.

Like, Lady Gaga will show up in movies every now and then, but as far as I know her message is that it's OK to conform, just be yourself, even if you're seen as weird, whereas Die Antwoord's "fuck the status quo" attitude is pretty hypocritical, especially with the Columbia Pictures logo at the end.

It just makes me want to see it more.

The Mothership - 2015-01-09

I can't help but worry that this will end up being referred to as 'that goddamn South African rap group's movie'.

Other than that it looks pretty predictable and they just showed the whole movie - but still looks like fun, too. I grew up on Short Circuit and Robocop is one of my top 10 ever for the perfect blend of brutal satire and brutal action, so my hopes are high here. Perhaps too high

I'm conflicted.

theSnake - 2015-01-09

more like CRAPPIE

EvilHomer - 2015-01-10

Hey, CRAPPiE sounds kind of like CHAPPiE. Did you do that on purpose?

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-10

Ha!

fedex - 2015-01-10

'ees brilliant in 'is own way, 'ee is....

Maggot Brain - 2015-01-10

Where is the face of this movie? I need to punch it.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-01-10

Five stars because this basically steals from Short Circuit and makes it into something not entirely irritating.

Also I hate Short Circuit. Worst 80s scifi film along with Mac and Me.

Kid Fenris - 2015-01-10

The worst '80s scifi film? Worse than Nukie? Worse than Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone? Worse than SOLARBABIES?

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

I always get SC1 and SC2 confused, and in either case it's been at least 20 years since I saw one of them. The Mac and Me analogy is pretty accurate. It's just ET with Robot; Mac and Me is ET with.. well, ET with ET but hey it's different because if you look closely, ET never entered a McDonalds the entire film. Totally different movies.

A good friend of mine told me that Mac and Me was actually her favorite movie growing up, completely unironically. She's one of those people who say they've never seen Star Wars and you want to call bullshit, like everyone's seen it even if they didn't, but I can assure you, she has in fact never seen Star Wars. And Short Circuit plus Batteries Not Included are ties for second.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-10

"The problem with artificial intelligence is that it's way too unpredictable."

Assuming you had an actual A.I., it's made up of computer code that (presumably) has been rigorously tested and continues to be tested even after deployment. How is that more unpredictable than giving a human a gun and telling him to keep order?

"What interests me is a machine that can think..."

Okay, that's not too bad...

"...and feel."

Turn in your fake scientist script and kill whoever wrote this crap.

fedex - 2015-01-10

I think you are approaching this from the standpoint that it is a SERIOUS MOVIE, which is a mistake, because by including die Atwood it's almost guaranteed to be a glorious, ridiculous train wreck of fun and stupidity. THAT is why I am excited for it anyway.

ashtar. - 2015-01-10

I bet they don't even address Searle's Chinese Room argument, let alone Dreyfus' Heideggerian arguments that a cognitivist form of A.I. couldn't account for the complexity of our embodied intentional relations to the world.

One star!

infinite zest - 2015-01-10

Yeah.. I liked D9 but in the end it was a popcorn action movie, just a better-than-average one, like X-Men Days of Future Past, which did raise some interesting issues, but it's still a movie where you want to see that guy who plays Wolverine (what's his name again?) do his thing. Automata looks like a better bet for dealing with serious human-A.I. relations; this just looks like a fun movie to sneak a few beers into and watch the predictable plot unfold. The only time I felt really "betrayed" was with I Robot; if Proyas had just gone ahead and made his own movie (and maybe not an over-acting Will Smith) I would've liked it just fine. But apparently nobody would've just gone and seen a futuristic sci-fi robot movie from the director of The Crow and Dark City. Nope! You had to put some author's name on there that most your audience probably can't spell or pronounce correctly..

It's kinda like Robocop or Point Break. Verhoven and Bigelow are both very talented auteurs who are able to create much bigger stories (I'm thinking Black Book and Hurt Locker respectively) but when you break it all down, the former movies were fun, and despite certain subtleties: one was about a cop who was a robot, and the other was about surfing and bank heists. While only one of them won best picture, I believe both of the latter deserved them in their respective years.

So I dunno. Blomkamp isn't reinventing the wheel but I don't think that's his intent. And when's the last time anybody here re-watched Short Circuit anyway? It wasn't exactly what I'd call a masterpiece, even if it does get some nostalgia points.

betamaxed - 2015-01-10

This looks absolutely ridiculous and very bad. Plus no steve gutenberg so why bother?

SolRo - 2015-01-10

For the haterz

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-01-10

die antwoord is garbage music for garbage people

Gmork - 2015-01-11

ur dum

Kid Fenris - 2015-01-10

Ripley still doesn't trust Synthetics after all these years, but maybe Briareos from Appleseed can change her mind!

EvilHomer - 2015-01-11

Briareos is a cyborg. CHAPPiE is, at least from what I gathered in this trailer, a robot. They are totally different.

Kid Fenris - 2015-01-11

That's true, but if Chappie ends up working as a SWAT cop and dating a woman half his size, I'm gonna tell all the anime message boards!

EvilHomer - 2015-01-11

She'd have to be a midget to be half his size. That's another problem with CHAPPiE; looks like he doesn't even lift.

hammsangwich - 2015-01-10

Why is Chappie Mexican?

Maggot Brain - 2015-01-11

Does Chappie find God at the end? I get the feeling that we're all going to be sucker punched by the the big twist that this is a pro intelligent design movie.

fedex - 2015-01-11

If only! Oh god that would be great, you could even have Saint Yo-landi ascending into heaven at the end, assuming that she died for the cause somewhere along the way...
