stars for boehner rolling his eyes at the end

Anaxagoras - 2015-01-21

My stars go to Biden, as always. He's obviously trying to appears statesman-like, but he can't quite suppress a huge shit-eating grin. The weird frowny grin that ends up on his face is pure magic.

Uncle Joe is always the one to watch at these things.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-21

I didn't watch this because I didn't want to see another GOP shithead make a temporary celebrity of himself by interrupting the proceedings or some other immature bullshit, but this was a pretty gold moment.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-21

Fun fact: Boner's YouTube channel put up the State of the Union speech with a REALLY clumsy edit that took out everything Obama said about climate change.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-22

Yeah I saw that. And also the Ted Cruz "SOTU response" his staff had to immediately take down that went all over the net anyway. What a fucking clown car.

Viral marketing.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-21

I just wish he'd had that attitude two years ago. If he had, we might not have had such a dismal voter turnout in the midterm elections and the Republicans might not have congress, now.

Still, we're having some effect. Lots more Republicans are talking about middle class relief and a few are even making some noise about economic inequality even if most of them are still pushing the old, "We need to give rich people more money then everyone will be better off," party line.

Hell, even Romney's trying to re-brand himself as a friend of the working class.

SolRo - 2015-01-21

"Lots more Republicans are talking about middle class relief and a few are even making some noise about economic inequality even if most of them are still pushing the old, "We need to give rich people more money then everyone will be better off," party line."

Politicians are saying things popular with the majority of voters while acting only for their personal interests? What a strange new world we live in!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-21

It IS kind of weird for the GOP. They've been rooted for so long in the crazy of their rabid voting base that to hear that any of them are considering anything that doesn't involve tax cuts for the rich, substituting Jesus for science, and banning women & gays is pretty unusual. That those who are talking about things that would help the middle class without helping the 1% directly and they're NOT being immediately vilified by the Tea Partiers is even weirder.

SolRo - 2015-01-22

it really isn't.

they stop pandering to the teabagger spectrum after primaries end.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-22

Yes, SolRo, the fact some Republican politicians have had to start saying things that would have been unthinkable for Republicans to say only a few years ago shows public opinion is starting to shift to the left.

How the majority of Americans feel is way more important than anything any politician says, ever. The things politicians say are just weather vanes.

People have gone from mocking the Occupy movement to realizing the cost of higher education is ridiculously higher. They're less friendly towards mega-billionaires. More people realize climate change is a real thing.

We're slowly but surely getting there.

Bort - 2015-01-22

"I just wish he'd had that attitude two years ago. If he had, we might not have had such a dismal voter turnout in the midterm elections and the Republicans might not have congress, now."

If you (the abstract "you") have paid any attention at all to the Republicans this century, and still you don't vote in every single election to try to knock them out of power, that's on you. Obama shouldn't have to jingle his keys to get your attention.

The people who claim there are no meaningful differences between the Democrats and Republicans are full of shit and they know it.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-22

The problem is, Obama tried to come off as more moderate because he hoped it would help more Democratic candidates win more seats when he should have been doing the exact opposite.

Bort - 2015-01-22

Obama's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he tries to talk about the successes of Obamacare the Left bitches that they didn't get a public option; if he tries to talk about job creation the Left bitches that he should have created even more jobs; if he tries to talk about LGBT advances the Left bitches that Obama was just playing politics and LBJ would have been twice as gay rightsy. And in terms of this particular SotU, much of the Left thinks it's lies, all lies.

There are things maybe Obama should have done or shouldn't have done, but at a certain point, the voting public needs to take responsibility for their own choices, including the decision to not vote at all. 63.3% of the Left opted not to vote; some percentage of that was because of new Voter ID laws, but the rest was by choice.

The Mothership - 2015-01-21

I so, SOOO wanted him to throw up his hands and say 'WHAT?

"Thug Life"

SolRo - 2015-01-21

You have to hand it to the republicans for suppressing their natural urge to form a lynch mob whenever a black person speaks without being told.

fedex - 2015-01-21

the suppressed rage is clearly visible in Boner's oh-so-punchable face

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-22

Obama's subdued, satisfied smile at the end.

chumbucket - 2015-01-22

These addresses would be so much more entertaining if they're done from a bar.

Anaxagoras - 2015-01-22

That ain't subdued. And I love him all the more for it.
