I almost cried watching this today. I'm almost crying watching this now. I hope he's going to be OK.

I made a new picture this morning. I've been wrestling with doing a picture of Chris for months now; I hesitate because there's a fine line between tribute and mockery, and given the general climate of the CWC fandom, I don't want to inadvertently come off as a dick, compounding his misery. I try not to judge people who treat Chris like shit, mind you; I understand why the trolls might "hate" him, but that sort of behavior, it's just not for me. Anyway, I hope I managed to capture not just the creepiness and eccentricity, but also some of the courage, warmth, and dignity of our hero. Mr Chandler is a complex figure who raises deep, often troubling questions with his art, and try as I might, I really don't think I'm worthy of capturing even half of what he means to us.

BTW, there's already trolls in place at the courthouse. They are staking out the neighbourhood tonight, and say they will try to get video footage of his court appearance tomorrow.

The picture is nice. I doubt Chris will do jail time, unless he really fucks up at court or something.

This is ChrisChan we're talking about. He barely survived the last trial, and his lawyer for that one was a prominent Virginia state congressman!

cognitivedissonance - 2015-02-04

Four words: "Ward of the State".

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-04

Is the Sonichu medallion and sports bra considered attire appropriate for court?

BiggerJ - 2015-02-04

The people at the forum are pretty much convinved that Chris going into care is both A: the best thing for him and B: never going to happen.

Scrimmjob - 2015-02-04

He will probably try to mace the judge for not respecting him, and getting into his personal space.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-02-05

The worrisome thing is that, Chris being Chris, and the American Prison Industrial Complex being what it is, it's unlikely he'll ever leave jail once he enters it. If it weren't for that unfortunate little fact, I'd say it would do him a world of good.

BTW, this is one of my alltime favorite Chris works. It would be nice to see a curated collection of these clips. Given all the work that's already been done, I'm surprised this doesn't exist?

EvilHomer - 2015-02-05

Mr Wikdcat - the best collection is probably the CWCville Library Channel on Youtube. It's got most of his videos, and they're well organized.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-05

Oh, and GOOD NEWS. The Trial of the Century is over!

It got postponned again. He needs to come back in April.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-02-05

Oh for fuck's sake.

That's good. Honestly though, with his disability I don't think he'd be going to a regular prison. I'm an independent contractor for adults with disabilities providing respite care, mostly in the Spring and Summer months when parents or full-time caregivers are on vacation, and one of my clients is perfectly cool and we like to play video games, talk about music, see movies.. only two things (that I know of) drive him to violence: dogs and thunderstorms. He hasn't lashed out on me, but the parents of the client gave me a few examples. So I have to be really careful. Because there's dogs everywhere. So I could imagine him assaulting somebody on the bus because a service dog got on, things like that. Chris' reaction was the same. As far as I know he was there for one reason. You could make the argument that my client could actively pursue dogs and "vandalize" them in some way the way Chris did with Sonic instead of avoid it altogether, but for some reason (that nobody could figure out) he wanted them as far away as possible and proximity would lead to physical altercations. What happened to Chris is his "mascot," for lack of a better word, was tarnished. I hope that the judge understands that distinction in the same way as if my client assaulted someone with a dog.

And speaking of Mascots, let's talk sports for a second. As much as I hate to say it, I would feel bad for those Redskins fans who don't want to name and mascot changed because that was their father/son bonding time growing up, possibly having to bury their dad with some sort of Redskins memorabilia. Or my own school, when they changed Bucky Badger into this "EXTREME" Badger, and people were up in *ahem* arms about the change, which included drunken protests and the university changed it more-or-less back. In either case, I can't think of any acts of vandalism or violence, but if one were to occur it wouldn't imply racism on the former's behalf or insanity on the latter's. And you'd pretty much have to follow sports or have gone to school in the Midwest to know what the Badger looks like, whereas Sonic is almost universally known by everyone, gamer or not. Chris didn't have any intent of robbing the gamestop or harming anyone, except for the Sonic display. So hopefully the judge can understand that and go easy on him.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Chris was suffering from PTSD. I've been reading his Facebook posts and leaked chatlogs all month, and many of the things he says in regards to the GameStop incident sound to me like rather serious stress reactions. He's fixated on this idea of Threatening Males looming up behind him, and then panicking, lashing out because he didn't know what to do. Like you, IZ, I work in the health care field, mostly with trauma victims, and the way Chris acts, the way he talks, the physical symptoms he reports, it's frighteningly familiar. Chris having PTSD may sound absurd at first... until you remember that this is a guy who's been suffering some absolutely horrific emotional, physical, material, and yes even sexual abuse, nonstop for the past seven years.

I don't know if involuntary commitment would be good for him, as a) I detest the very idea of involuntary commitments, as a matter of principle, and b) I'm not at all convinced that Chris poses a danger to himself or others. On the contrary, Mr Chandler has demonstrated a remarkable level of passivity and self-control, given the circumstances. In my opinion, people should stop having opinions on what he should do, as it's his life and it's futile to armchair-boss a man like Chris around, especially if you're a complete stranger to him. That said, if I really *had* to choose something for Chris to do, I'd like to see him in an art therapy program. I think he would get a lot out of something like that, particularly one with a loose, self-directed format, as art is one of his favorite coping mechanisms already, and it's something he's motivated to do on his own.

BiggerJ - 2015-02-05

infinite zest: Based on Chris' past experiences with authority figures, the judge will probably not be as understanding of the situation as you hope he will be. On the forums, if you say the authority figures in Chris's life (except Barbara and to a lesser extent Bob) were in the wrong to act how they did, you'll probably get called a white-knight. But let's not forget that Mary Lee Walsh told him 'you're never gonna get a girlfriend, this way [attraction signs] or any way', which probably wasn't the best thing to say.

infinite zest - 2015-02-05

Yeah, you guys know the story way better than I do, I'm just trying to put myself in the shoes of an attorney or a judge who probably doesn't know a whole lot less about the situation than I do. Besides a couple of instances where I thought bullying was unnecessary, I haven't followed Chris at all or commented in the videos until this incident.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-06

I'd really like to hear Slaweel's take on all that. Like Chris' siblings and Wes Iseli, Christorians generally leave Ms Walsh well-enough alone - which is great, don't get me wrong! - but the PVCC incident was one of the most critical moments in Chris' creative career, and yet so little is known about what *actually* transpired. From the account Chris gives of it, she does indeed sound like a very, very poor counselor; perhaps not a demonic witch queen from the blackest reaches of the Negaverse, but at least not someone who should ever deal with an autistic man on a professional basis.

Open question for any and all fans: which camp do you align with? Would you consider yourself a "troll", a "white knight", or something else?

For my part, I'm probably more if a knight, since I don't like to torment Chris and I generally wish him well. But I would not be mislabeling myself as such; unlike white knights, I don't really want to see Chris "improve". I want to see Chris *happy*, I want to see Chris have a good quality of life as *he* defines it, but frankly I couldn't care less if he ever gets a job or stops playing with LEGOs or turns into just another cynical politically-correct drunk like the rest of us. To me, Chris is at his best when he is doing what he does naturally - drawing comics, making videos, and dryhumping blowup dolls in public. I guess the forum hivemind would call me "an enabler" for this, but I like the PD and I like Classic Chris and I think it's both silly, and even a little hypocritical, for so many people to pass judgement on something so rare and beautiful as the CWCiverse, particularly when the perverse strangeness is what brought these two warring groups of socio-normative busibodies, the trolls and the knights, together in the first place!

Why would anyone want to "fix" John Waters? Why would anyone want to "destroy" Divine?

Sexy Duck Cop - 2015-02-06

You're being too generous for an Evil Homer. While I understand that 99% of the people commenting on Chris--myself included--are armchair psychologists applying psychobabble to a deeply disturbed man, the simple truth is that Chris has seen professionals, and none of them have done anything besides prescribe him some SSRIs and send him on his way with not so much as a swat on the ass. He has nothing left BUT white knights and the threat of institutionalization.

Chris does not need art therapy. Even at his happiest and most productive, at best he'd release about a dozen half-assed, hand-drawn comic pages a year, and when he wasn't making excuses for why he couldn't draw more than one page a month, he wasn't even bothering to color in most of his art. He's "passionate" about art the same way a second-grader is "passionate" about making construction-paper turkeys for Thanksgiving.

And Chris is a threat to the public. Jesus dude, he ran over a guy with a car and maced a Gamestop employee. He has shown zero remorse, even at the expense of his own legal defense. Do you really think this trend will magically vanish without drastic intervention? What if he thinks a "threatening male" is so dangerous he should be maced in the eyes? Or stabbed? Or have a rock thrown at his face? Chris has shown a consistent pattern of violent behavior and unwillingness to accept its consequences. I'm not saying he needs to be gang-raped in an ultra-max prison, I'm saying he needs to be closely supervised by trained professionals that can evaluate his story from scratch, rather than getting a CWCkie evaluation from his church counselor.

It won't happen, of course. The judge will shove him through the system, call him a confused retard, put him on some basic community service and probation. And Chris will grow more bitter, more desperate, more impoverished, and his anger will boil over into something more destructive. No one wants that. He needs help now.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-06

Mr Duck Cop, 99% of all professional mental healthcare *is* giving someone some SSRIs and a slap on the ass. What else can they do? The only reasonable answer is that they tailor their treatment to help the patient in a manner which the patient will be receptive to. Hence my proposal, that Chris be given access to an art therapy program. If only makes six half-assed comic book pages in a year? Well, that's six comic book pages. That's not bad. The point of art therapy isn't so much what he does, how much he does, or how well he does it, the point is what he gets out of it.

The idea that Chris is "unproductive" when it comes to churning out comics is largely a relic of late-period Sonichu, particularly during the Asperchu saga and on up until the final cancellation of the series. This was a period of intense harrasment and stress, in which, according to Chris' own words, all of his motivation to continue Sonichu was destroyed. Prior to the deluge of drama he had a fairly steady output; after the deluge, it was understandable that Chris stopped drawing.

Finally, he bumped Michael Snyder with his car at a very low speed, no more than a couple miles per hour. He sprayed a half-second spritz of pepper spray at a guy, and didn't even bother to aim it at the guy's face, but at his chest. That's it. That's the extent of Chris' rap sheet. He's got anger problems, sure, but he's hardly dangerous, and when you stop to think of things he's been through? All the taunting and the identity theft and the blackmail and the sexual absue? My god. If Chris was ever truly a danger to the public, he would have gone on a shooting spree years ago! The amount of restraint he shows - even if it's just because he's cowardly or he's lazy or what have you - is bordering on the saintly; we can conjecture all we want about what he "might" do, but the fact is, what he "is" doing is far from being a danger to society.
