I really don't think I have the words. As a 90s kid I never liked Star Trek. Any of them, really, like "where's the CGI" but it was pretty much the only show my dad would make me watch with him, like "you don't know from what's good, son." He'd bring home those CBS VHSs and we'd watch them together and slowly I realized that he was a lot like Spock. So I looked beyond the space battles and sometimes cheesy sets and focused on the story and characters, and Nimoy became sort of my TV dad. I never had a chance to meet the man, but if I had I'd say "thank you."

Just watched him as the bad guy in the 1978 Body Snatchers remake. May he rest in peace.

I just found out a minute ago, and I came right here.

When Leonard Nimoy appeared in the first JJ Abrams Star Trek in 2009, it was one of the great moments of my moviegoing life, because it was such a wonderful surprise.

I know he directed some movies, but I can't think of a role he played other than Spock. But what a role! I can't imagine StarTrek without Nimoy, and I can't imagine 21st century Nerd culture without Star Trek. I can remember walking around with my dad in Manhattan in the 60s (I was Ten) and Spock posters were in every bookstore. Spock was an icon, and he represented what was special about Star Trek. Spock was the mysterious stranger, with an outsiders view of humanity. He was solitary, isolated. In other words, to quote Kirk's eulogy, he was the most human.

To be typecast as an extraterrestrial would seem to be the worst thing that could happen to an actor, but Nimoy came to embrace the character. Over the years, Spock and Nimoy aged beautifully together. Spock became wiser and more comfortable, it would seem, with his human half. Logic, he said, was the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it.

Nimoy declined to appear in "Generations", a good call, in my opinion. Asked if he was finished with Star Trek, he smiled and said it would be foolish to ever say that he was finished with Star Trek.

He was pretty lucky. He got to be an important part of something important, and he was very good at it. He was born to be the greatest pop culture extraterrestrial of the century.

I've never watched Star Trek and know Mr. Nimoy primarily from his Tech Tree quotes in Civ IV

"I fooled you. I fooled you. I got pig iron. I got all the pig iron."

Damn. He was a good actor and a really kind human being. Rest in peace.

This one hurts.

I grew up on Star Trek. I was always drawn to Spock because he was quiet and reserved and dignified and educated. Thoughtful, logical and deeply intuitive. Everything I wanted to be.

This was like losing a piece of my childhood and then, as he embraced the nerd in all of us, I felt like I lost a part of my adulthood too.

I watched the scene of Spock's funeral from Wrath of Khan when I heard and almost broke down a bit.

"Of my friend, I can only say this: Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels; his was the most human."

I'm not ashamed to say that I cried today. like real tears, cause Spock was one of my heroes growing up.

He was really young for a Vulcan. Live long and prosper wherever you are, Leonard.
