Binro the Heretic - 2015-03-24

HA-HA!

FUCK YOU, REBEL SCUM!

oddeye - 2015-03-24

this was some MEGA anti-rebel propaganda

Binro the Heretic - 2015-03-25

The rebels have no plan beyond "smash the Empire" so fuck those guys.

We can't all just dance with giant cannibal teddy bears forever after the government collapses.

infinite zest - 2015-03-25

Call "Judas" if you want, but I didn't see the original trilogy until the special editions came out in theatres. There were a couple reasons for this: I was born in 1982, so basically the trilogy was finishing up, and VHSs of the movies were either impossible to find or really shitty quality because they'd been watched probably thousands of times. So anyway my initial exposure to Star Wars was TIE Fighter for PC, so I've always been an Imperial man. I mean, sucks about Alderan and all, but still.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-03-25

wow IZ we're like twins!
I also was born in 1982 and played tie fighter 1st. I never played X-wing (the game that came out before)
Did you play tie fighter with the mouse? I did some crazy scrolling playing that!

infinite zest - 2015-03-25

I think I tried it with the mouse.. it was weird. Back then aiming with keyboard just made so much sense. Now every game has mouse aiming! You were onto something!

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

Fuck yeah, Empire rules. Rebels were just monarchist counter-revolutionaries, anyway.

Oh no, our 1,000 year-old theocracy just crumbled because it was decadent and ruled by a bunch of simpering chumps! Quick, let's all flock to the True-Born Princess and her merry band of hypocritical space-Jesuits, yeah, we'd be much better off throwing our lot in with them than with Darth fucking Vader and the 501st.

Don't get me wrong, I love Yoda, but after he died there was no reason to mark for the Rebels anymore.

oddeye - 2015-03-25

I can't abide genocide. I don't agree 100% with the Rebel Alliance but change must be brought about! My allegiance is to the republic, to DEMOCRACY!

I will do what I must.

BHWW - 2015-03-24

It would be great if these upcoming Star Wars movies had wailing rock guitar soundtracks like this short.

somedongus - 2015-03-24

Hooo boy. Love the effort and intent, but that guitar shit has zero place in this. It's so close otherwise. I don't get it though, there were a ton of music cues from Tie Fighter that are in the spirit of Star Wars that could have been riffed upon. Why couldn't they just do covers of the midi tracks from the game instead of this xtreme crap?

Doomstein - 2015-03-29

I'm an anime dickhead, so I can explain that one. This production was heavily influenced both visually and musically by a 1980's anime called 'Macross'. In Macross you hear that wailing guitar shit all the time during the battles.

oddeye - 2015-03-24

I appreciate the hardwork and the animation is cool and such but this was pretty weak tbh. Music was complete shit and it's ol' cliche characters, each in a different ship that might even form one giant, guitar wailing robot in part 2, who knows?

Also do TIE fighters have turbine engines? Dumb as fuck if they actually do.

Gmork - 2015-03-25

TIE stands for Twin Ion Engine, and thats what those two panels on the side are.

infinite zest - 2015-03-25

I liked the music given the context: this is more of an homage to Macross and such, where metal music like this was common. It just happens to be in the Star Wars universe instead of wherever those animes took place. I don't see the original soundtrack working at all with this, but prove me wrong if you like with a youtubedoubler that actually works.

Gmork - 2015-03-25

Goddamn snitch probe droid.

The Mothership - 2016-01-05

That fucker ruins everything.

Gmork - 2015-03-25

The scene direction could use some work, and the shots are sometimes TOO gimmicky (a little bit of cheese is good though, evoking that 80's anime feel), but overall this was extremely superb animation.

Id like to see what they can do with more resources and actual dialogue.

Maybe.

Maggot Brain - 2015-03-25

Star Was distilled down to a scene from HEAVY METAL.

You go Empire, fuck up those rebel scoundrels!

duck&cover - 2015-03-25

I think this is from the same guy who did the Doctor Who anime:

https://youtu.be/kt3qZYUPi2Y

Bobonne - 2015-03-25

Yep, same guy.

Nominal - 2015-03-25

Didn't he say it every minute of footage took him a YEAR to animate?

infinite zest - 2015-03-25

Woah! That one's incredibly awesome too. He said that the TIE Fighter one took four years working mostly on weekends, so it wouldn't surprise me (I actually think the Dr. Who one's a little more impressive). That's some serious dedication. Whatever he's not doing on his "weekends," he should seriously be working for an animation studio.

Bobonne - 2015-03-25

Sounds about right, given how long various Film Board of Canada solo creations tended to take to animate by hand, over the years.

urbanelf - 2015-03-25

The song in the background is called "Rock & Roll".

Meerkat - 2015-03-25

Helmet dematerialization technology (HDT) that allows your hair to momentarily fly in the Cockpit Interior Wind Generation (CIWG) system is truly the mark of an advanced civilization!

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-03-25

I just want to point out that the probe droid was making the proper noises, and I'm really happy about that attention to detail.

Raggamuffin - 2015-03-25

Yeah, but why rip off all the sound effects but not the music?

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-03-25

Not enough bitching guitars, that's why.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2015-03-25

Frimminonthefrimfram

Raggamuffin - 2015-03-25

Makes me feel like I'm playing Guilty Gear

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-03-25

While awesome this does miss the point of tie fighters.
One thing that makes them cool is they seem like exactly what a grim dystopian empire would produce for war, cannon fodder! They're really crap and not standard cool spaceship shaped and have no shields and are very weak, *but* they are obvs cheap to make the the empire just churns out millions of them which spill out of star destroyers.
(I know in tie fighter there was tie advanceds and so on, but they were the rare craft of officers and darth vader and so on, totally in keeping with the evil empire thing, the vast majority got the crappy cannon fodder version)

It also reminds me a story from my friend from when he was playing sid meiers alpha centauri.
He designed a unit that could fly, was fast, and had a big gun. But it had nothing else, no armor, nothing. But they were really cheap and he churned out hundreds of them. They were perfect for attacking, as they would just attack a city for example, do their damage and shortly after die, so there was less upkeep expenses involved. He descibed them as tie fighters

EvilHomer - 2015-03-26

Armor is worthless on aircraft in Alpha Centauri; IIRC, the needlejets and copters use attack values to compute defense, not armor values, and at any rate the way the cost algorithm was set up, adding even small amounts of armor to an air chassis made your unit prohibitively expensive.

As for TIE fighters, there are the following points to consider. First, the expendability of TIE fighters is what makes an animation like this so compelling; humanizing a group of gritty heroes who, let's face it, are usually always written off as faceless, emotionless blaster-fodder. Second, this demonization is itself a problem, as almost all Star Wars media is written as propaganda justifying the actions of the victors - the so-called "Rebel" Alliance. By challenging the racist, dehumanizing attitude Star Wars writers have traditionally taken towards the brave men and women who flew in the Imperial TIE Fighter Corps, this animation is being remarkably progressive and avant-garde! Finally, you have to remember that TIE Fighters were NOT pieces of crap. They had notoriously poor armor, that's true, and particularly later in the war, losses of men and material were staggeringly high. But the fighters themselves had great maneuverability and performance characteristics, making them ideal for dogfighting and carrier-borne space superiority missions. To use a realworld analogy, they were similar to the planes of the Japanese Imperial Navy, particularly the A6 Zero - all bite, no bullshit. Their increasingly poor performance later in the war was the result of a creeping shortage in skilled pilots, similar to what befell both the IJN and the Luftwaffe. The Rebels, with their slower but much more heavily armored X-Wings (think American F4 Corsairs or P51 Mustangs) were able to wage a war of attrition against the TIE elite, many of whom (I suspect mustache guy, for example) had been flying since the Clone Wars.

The TIE pilots were samurai, cherry blossoms on the solar winds.

oddeye - 2015-03-26

To mature with your comrades only to watch them die, one by one, all the while struggling with the crushing guilt of being the only one to survive suicide mission after suicide mission. To be driven, despite all this, by the code of bushido and to live with the mantra "I will fight until I die, I owe it to those that fell before me." This is to be more than flesh and bone. This is to be a TIE FIGHTER.

I will add my tears to those solar winds my friend, I owe it to thise that fell for me.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-03-28

"cherry blossoms on the solar winds"

Hooker - 2015-03-25

Anime is just a hilarious mismatch for Star Wars.

oddeye - 2015-03-26

Leave the stupid cartoons for kids and leave Star Wars for mature adults.

endlesschris - 2015-03-25

Man, whole lot of jaded assholes on poetv these days. This guy nails the 80s anime ascetic and makes it look damn good for a one man team.

oddeye - 2015-03-25

Why make it Star Wars then? He might as well have done any other anime universe. Star Wars and 80's anime are both pretty neat but this crossover needs tweaking in order to get the feel right IMO.

Also I'd rather have a Roger Rabbit live-action with cartoons style movie over everything being blue-screened in ANY DAY OF THE FUCKING WEEK.

Hazelnut - 2015-03-26

Star Wars animation > original trilogy > the better fan-fiction > video games > books > comics > the worse fan-fiction > prequels

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-06-08

The Ewoks cartoon is better than the original trilogy?!?
