I knew what a meme was as far back as the 1989 edition of The Selfish Gene. Oh snap, and what, son?

Of course, the meme meme was a different meme back then, the modern meme meme having memetically evolved into a meme of quite different meaning than it had before. The Memer in this meme commercial memes the word "word" in a much different manner from the metetic meaning of the word "meme" which *I* would accept! His memeing of the word "meme" as a mirthful macro appearing magically in meatspace is, culturally speaking, no more nor less valid than my own meme of "meme", taken as it were from The Selfish Gene. But despite all that, I still say the term "meme" is misused in the Memer's meme meme.

It seems weird to me that people remember the exact year they heard the word "meme".

Well, technically it was 1996 for me; I read that edition the summer after sixth grade, and I remember it well, because I thought all the science-knowledge I was getting from Mr Dawkins would be sure to impress the girls in my class that coming school year.

My hypothesis was incorrect.

I think it's like a Kennedy thing; the first time you hear the word "meme" is very important, because it changes your life, for better or worse.

I'd really hate to be that one little kid right now, whose first encounter with the word "meme" was from this commercial.

Not the year I first heard the word, the year that I learned what it meant. It was when I discovered and submitted the Boxxy Episode of Know your Meme, and the huge negative reaction it got (after being voted up in about 90 minutes) fascinated me. It was the beginning of my introduction to feminist politics on the internet. And the power of ADORABLE.

However, as SP points out, the selfie meme's shift has severely limited its instructive potential; while the contemporary selfie meme retains the same pejorative connotations as the classical selfie meme, the *reason* for these pejorative connotations is no longer contained within our reading. In other words, the "hatred of selfies" meme is now simply an arbitrary construct left to us by tradition, rather than well-reasoned social criticism directed against online vanity.
